Jack was once an open and cheerful elven blooded hunter of the woods. He was skilled with a bow and knew woodcraft well. He lived off the land, at peace with the fey and agent for the local elven druidic circle.

Then came the necromancer's hordes. Spirits and bodied undead ravaged his forest home turning treants into undead shambling things and twisting the animals into unliving servitors. dead humans were everywhere, moaning and clawing at anything that breathed. The druids and fey fought back, and Jack was at their side. But it was not enough and the circle fell, the survivors fleeing for their lives.

Jack survived, but not without inner scars from being wraith-touched. His spark of enjoyment was drained away in the conflict leaving a broken man. His connection to nature and the animals of the wild was savaged, leaving a burning hatred for the undead. Jack became a gangrel vagabond making what living he could, until he came upon the Lightbringers. A group dedicated to the eradication of undead. Jack found a new calling, a new purpose in life which he has pursued since then.

Skorl Darkskull

Skorl is a big, ugly, thuggish looking half-orc warrior. Standing 6’3” in height and having a powerful build (250 lbs), he gives a first impression of raw, unbridled strength. He wears his thick black mane of hair in many long braids, decorated with beads of iron and bone, and his cold gray eyes look like stones under his brutish brow. Several old battle scars mar his features. He dresses in rough leathers and furs, which tend to give him a primal, savage look. Close inspection will note that despite his shabby appearance, his weapons and armor are well-maintained.

Despite his wild and brutish looks, Skorl is not dumb. He is a disciplined and skilled fighter, save for those rare moments of extreme rage that he sometimes flies into in the midst of combat. What he lacks in social graces, he makes up for with his battle prowess. His love of strong spirits, combat and women is well known, and he succumbs to distraction rather easily. He enjoys contests of athletic ability and physical prowess. The half-orc is something of a carefree spirit, doing his own thing and acting as he will. Still, he believes strongly in the concept of freedom, not just for himself but for all peoples. Skorl has a streak of greed in his blood as well…he is willing to go to great lengths to earn coin with which to buy those things he desires. He enjoys having a good time, and is very friendly with those who get to know him; unfortunately, his imposing appearance and the fact that he is not well spoken mean few ever take the time to befriend him.

Skorl follows the teachings of Kord.

*From [i]Complete Mage[/i]

Fair haired and light-skinned, dressed in a long coat with and wearing a wide-brimmed hat his happy-go-lucky demeanor masks his inner turmoil.

One night, in the small hours of the morning, Nikolai snapped to sudden wakefulness in his family's farmhouse. Moving quietly, listening for the slightest sound, he crept to the door leading to the common area and eased it open.

What lay on the other side of the door was nothing short of his worst nightmare. His mother was crumpled against the wall, at the center of a spreading pool of her own blood. In the center of the room was his father, woodchopping axe slumping from his lifeless hand; his heart being feasted upon by some foul creature crouched over his corpse.

The creature spotted Nikolai, stood and turned towards him. Then, in utter silence, it charged. Nikolai screamed and held up his hands in front of himself in a defensive gesture, expecting he only had seconds to live as the creatures claws raked across his field of vision... and scraped harmlessly off the air a few inches from his face. Again the creature swiped at him; and again the blow rebounded, as if off an impenetrable barrier between Nikolai and the creature. Nikolai felt a warmth well up within him, concentrating in his hands and making his fingers tingle. Pointing at the creature, a beam of bright light shot forth and struck the creature, causing it to reel back for a moment. Then, as it crouched to pounce at him again, it dissolved into mist and vanished.

With his sister Natalia missing and parents slain by undead, Nikolai had few options. Having been told that they could help him develop his powers and train him in the ways of fighting undead Nikolai sold what few possessions his family had and set out to find and apprentice himself to the Lightbringers.

Ricven Spellhand now Rick Swordhand, a former noble man of a
prestige home in Amn, He rejected his family name after his father
Jahard Spellhand, a cowled wizard of some authority and influence,
rebuked his sons profession as a swordsman who only uses his
magically abilities secondarily. Ricven left his home at 17 and joined
a local caraven company as a guard under his new name Rick Swordhand.
Traveling from town to town working various jobs and tasks in the towns
he traveled to in search of wealth and power. Now he is at Weary
Horse Inn some thirty miles outside Barovia. He is still just traveling
 looking for wealth and power.

Not a great big man, average build. About 5 ft 8 150 pounds, muscular
but not a body builder. Long brown hair that shades his face masking over
his hazel eyes. His light tan makes him seem like someone who was just
seen the light of day for the first time in years, or just came into a
climate with a decent amount of sunlight. His armor and weapons are
well kept and in combat his hair pulled out of his eyes. He has an aura
about him that wanes the weak and perks the curiosity of the strong.

[/sblock][sblock=Description]Cedric is a young man in his early twenties. A little above average height with an average build. A messy mop of blonde hair crowns his head, with sharp green eyes peering out from his face.[/sblock][sblock=Background]My father liked to call himself a rogue, but I knew that he was a thief. A petty criminal, living in the slums of the old city, scrounging off those too poor or helpless to do anything about it. He acted like he was some great artist, but really he was just a disgrace. My mother and I did as best we could, living from day to day, and eating the food he put on the table because we had to. But we didn't like it.

When I was still but a boy, he decided that I should follow in his footsteps, and become a thief like he was. He started taking me along with him on his jobs, and teaching me his skills. My brief objections were met with sharp fists. I kept my silence, and learned what he taught, fearing the reprisals that would come if I disobeyed him. Still, the thought of being like he was sickened me. I could see the poverty and fear which pervaded our neighborhood. Did we really need to take more from these people?

I was fourteen when my father beat my mother to death in a drunken rage. A job had gone badly for him, some of his crew had been caught with nothing to show for it. I tried to stop him, but I didn't have the strength. I walked away with a few bruises, but not so for my mother. I buried her myself that night, after he had passed out, and then I left that life forever. I briefly considered taking everything from our home, cleaning it out, selling it all for whatever coppers it would earn me for my new life. But I luckily I stopped myself when I realized that he had nearly driven me to becoming a thief, just like him. I left that night with nothing but the clothes on my back, and I've never returned.

I spent the next few years doing whatever I could to earn my living. Running errands, working the docks, cleaning out stables. The only thing I would never do, was put my father's teachings to use. I let myself go hungry rather than become a thief. Eventually I managed to scrape together a little money and was considering my future, perhaps a new life in a new city. I don't know where I would have ended up had I gone forth with that plan, but instead I saw a posting calling for able bodies to clear out a goblin warren. It would get me out of the city, and it would be a chance for a new life. I bought a rusty old sword from an old sailor I knew and left the city on my road to my new life as an adventurer.

The group sent to clean out that cave couldn't have been more green, a bunch of bums and thugs with no experience. I fit right in. It wasn't until we came to the first locked door that anyone even thought of the goblins as anything more than animals. One of the group was all set to pound his way through the door, probably getting the attention of every goblin in the place. I pulled him back with an admonishment for silence and was kneeling down in front of the door examining the lock before I knew what I was doing. I had a small crisis there. Was I destined to be a thief? But then I had a revelation, there were a lot of locked doors in the world, and not all of them belonged to the good people of the world. I stuck a thin dagger in the lock, and one sharp twist later I was opening the door onto a world of possibilities.[/sblock]
[sblock=Disruptive Attack]Level:4
Replaces:If you select this class feature you do not gain uncanny dodge at 4th level. Instead you gain uncanny dodge at 8th level (when you would normally gain improved uncanny dodge).
Benefit:Beginning at 4th level, whenever you hit a target that is flat footed against your attack, or whenever you hit a target that you flank, you can choose to sacrifice your sneak attack damage in order to apply a -5 penalty to that creature's AC for 1 round. Multiple hits on the same target don't stack. This extraordinary ability works even against creatures normally immune to extra damage from sneak attacks.[/sblock]

Author Background

I based this figure on various characters from comics and cartoons; when I think of Dareios,
I think of Bala in the classic “Prince Valiant” comic strips, and maybe of young Guts in
“Berserk”. His background was created with the Wild Coast or the Grand Duchy of
Karameikos in mind. As his place of birth and youth, I would favour Brindinford from the
WotC module “A Speaker in Dreams”.

Character Background

Already an experienced warrior and sellsword of about 23 years, Dareios hails from a distant
southern coast town. The eldest son of a shepherd, he was trained as a member of his
earldom's city guard troops, but denied to advance to higher military ranks because of his low
Frustrated, Dareios left his home and spent four years in the wild frontier regions, where he
earned a fame as honest and moral man of war. For saving a nobleman's life in a battle against
Gnollish marauders, he has recently been offered knighthood, and is now travelling to the
royal court to claim this new title that may grant him whatt he always has desired: A peaceful
and respected life with his family.
Dareios is cold and merciless in battle, and when he draws his sword, he does so to kill. On
the other hand, he is a quiet, almost timid person, when he's away from the battlefield, maybe
because he still considers himself an illiterate peasant. But though he is a quiet observer and a
calm opponent in any emotional discussion, he will not tolerate behaviour that goes against
his strict sense of right and wrong.

A picture of how Dareios could look like:

Appearance: Willow's stringy black hair hangs down over her ghostly white face, obscuring what most would call her best feature: her pale blue eyes. She is quite healthy, though those concerned may think she looks underweight, even for an elf. Her clothes are unkempt and often dusty from the road. A large snake appears at home wrapped around the quarterstaff strapped to her back.

Background: Those who once knew Willow would say she was beautiful, vibrant, and full of life. She learned the ways of the druid while acting as a scout for the druid circle. At any time should cound be found travelling through the treetops, her raven hair flowing easily behind her, and the sparkle in her pale blue eyes a shining glimmer of hope that all is right in the world.

But those days are gone now, and Willow lives a lone drifter, unkempt and dusty from the road. Her once beautiful hair now hangs in a tangled mass, covering her gaunt face. Her eyes still shine the purest blue beneath the miserable creature she has become, but the sparkle of hope for which they were known has long since faded.

As a scout, she should have seen it. She should have been able to warn them, but the necromancer's magic was too strong, too vile. His hoards of undead stormed the grove, destroying everything and everyone. Those few that survived fled, leaving the others to their fate. She will never forgive herself that she ran.

She returned to the grove some days later, her and a few others. Together they collected what was left of the fallen and destroyed the lingering undead, both old and newly created from the bodies of her friends and family. Ritual after ritual was performed, sending their orphaned souls home, and Willow left without a word.

She still visits the site of the slaughter, letting nostalgia draw its tears. Some of the old ones are still around too, but Willow never stays long. Jack has told her of the Lightbringers. She is considering the offer, but is still reluctant to join a group that she would someday call friends... that she would someday see die.
