Energy Substitution - aaargh!

I hope they use the MiniHB version, which is much better than the old T&B one.

But, of course, it was like 100% clear, that this feat would be in Complete Arcane, really.

I hope CA will not come up with a resurrected "Nonlethal Substitution", because that (as: Subdual Substitution in 3.0) was even worse.... :heh:

Kind regards

I think the reason why Energy Substitution didn't change the special effects is very much "political" in the sense that it doesn't introduce the need for more DM's adjudication. It's like saying that the DM can "wash his hands" off the responsibility of adjudicating how a cold-substituted lighting bolt works, and the designer is sure that changing energy type doesn't allow new tricks unintended by the spell (such as freezing a strip of water to create a temporary bridge of ice).

It's the kind of decision that puts the designer and the DM on a safe ground, even at the cost of possibly ridiculous paradox. And it's more or less the same principle which is followed by the polymorph spells rules, when consistency of the rules is more important than consistency of the sense.

Another thing: I would not really want to have E-sub change the spells according to the psionic stuff. That would make it even stronger.

If they do, I give all rogues Mettle.

My solution to energy substitution has always been: give creatures more energy resistances! :)

Cheese works both ways......

"Really! I took energy substitution: sonic 'cause it's in my character concept!"

Has anyone thought that perhaps they'll be using the energy substitution rules from the complete Psionics Handbook?

Cold runs on a Fort save and does +1 per die.

Fire does +1 per die.

Electricity has an easier chance to affect users with metal armor.

Sonic has -1 per die, but ignores object hardness

And so forth.

Wouldn't that be kinda unfair just because a wizard or sorcerer prepared well ahead of time?

If 'preparing well' is trivial for a caster (i.e. spend a feat on energy subtitution: suck it, people without three high saves) then 'evading well' should be trivial for a rogue.
