Energy substitution

Quick question: Can I modify a spell with energy substitution spontaneously (while casting the spell) or do I have to prepare it?
Example: A wizard with the energy substitution[Electricity] feat has memorized a Fireball and wants to change the energy to electricity.

Thanx in advance for all replies!

Energy substitution is a metamagic feat, so you use it as appropriate for your class. A spontaneous caster (e.g. sorcerer) would apply it spontaneously, while a wizard (or cleric, or druid, etc.) would apply it when preparing the spell.

And for a spontaneous caster, that would take the casting time for a standard action spell to a full-round action?

Having a question regarding this feat, I'll just add it on. I just started playing in a 3.5 game, and my DM informed me that Sonic energy is no onger included in this feat. Is this true? If so, does anyone have an opinion on what they like to replace it with? I'm playing a wizard in The shackled city campaign, who is from Cauldron.

Since sonic isn't allowed in the first place, how do you replace it with anything? Anyway, if you're looking for powergaming suggestions, I think acid is best as it probably has the least number of creatures with resistances (fire/cold being the most common). However, don't take my word for it -- make Nail do an analysis on it. ;)

Sonic IS allowed. In the original text source of the feat (I believe it is the Forgotten Realms Campaign guide or the Magic of Faerun guide I first saw it in... I cannot remember) the feat specifically lists "Sonic" as one of the types of energy that may be substituted.

I have heard that it has since been errataed in other sources to exclude Sonic, which I absolutely agree with. The only reason anyone I played with ever took this feat was specifically to get Sonic, so that they could cast spells that would never be resisted by anything that had any kind of resistance, since almost nothing has any kind of Sonic resistance.

You missed the part of resscane's post where he mentions 3.5. Sonic is not allowed in the 3.5 Energy Substitution feat. Can someone with the book on hand confirm this, though, please?

Sonic was included in the 3.0 version of the feat in Tome and Blood. It's no longer allowed in 3.5, though. Good choice since I suspect there are even fewer creatures resistant to sonic attacks than acid.
