ENnies discussion thread

Sialia, your draft logos are beautiful! Denise is the final arbiter, of course, but if you don't have her email address yet, you can contact me (I'm the volunteer coordinator this year) at buttercup dot d20 at gmail dot com.

We have a number of things on our plate that could benefit from someone with artistic talent. Also, are you going to GenCon this year? I'd love to meet you!

I'm a bit abashed to offer my humble opinion after all the heated discussion :)

I wanted to suggest, no matter what voting system you choose, if there will be ranking of products, to use a 1-5 scale. The reason is that ENWorld's review system works on a 1-5 scale, and people are familiar with that. Most voters probably read a few reviews on site, and have a solid understanding of what constitutes a 5 product, a 3 product and a 1 product (in their opinion).
I'm not really sure what you mean here. Forcing people using IRV to use all five ranks is probably not a great idea in that it perverts the system's original intentions.

If, on the other hand, you mean that we should keep last year's system of ranking each product on a 1-5 scale, I think most people on the thread have already agreed that, unfortunately, this system is incompatible within a system wherein people vote strategically. While I agree that this system is very accurate under certain conditions, sadly, these conditions are not actually present in ENNies voting.

I can provide you a 600 DPI version of the logo in PNG if you wish.

Also, although Dextra has the final call on this, is it possible to put "Celebrating Excellence in Gaming" into the margin of the medal?

600 DPI would let me do just about anything. Please send to MsCurio symbolgoeshere yahoo.com

I was definitely thinking that the writing around the rim ought to say what the award was for. Somebody who has never heard of us should know what the award means just by looking at the cover of the product on a shelf in a store. Same as the Caldecott and Newbury.

I'll put anythign you like in the rim, but once I've set it, it'll be a bit tricky to alter without having to redo the whole piece. So just to double check and confirm the final text, should it be "excellence in gaming" or "excellence in game design"?
(And do you want to actaully say somethign about ENWorld on it, in case someone says "hey, who are the givers of this award anyway"?) There should be enough text to let someone successfully Google us.

Buttercup, thanks. I don't think I'm going to make it to Enworld this year, but if you need stuff, send me emails at the above address and let me knowwhat you need. The better the description, the better the quality of the artwork. Er, usually.

Howsabout you hold off on doing anything until we actually have a logo? I'm not trying to sound snarky, and please forgive me if I do. We need to design a logo first, and then we can look at your awesome sticker designs!

I just jumped in on the last two pages, so I might have missed this one before if it was already suggested, but why not give each person two votes. One vote is worth 2 points, one is worth 1 point. You can always abstain and not vote.

So say products A, B, C, X, Y, and Z are up to win Best Alphabetical Game Product. I liked A best, so I give it 2 points, and I liked C next best, so I give it 1 point. If I don't like X, Y, or Z, I just don't vote for them. If I hated most of the books, but liked C a little, I can give C 1 point, and abstain on the 2-pt. vote.

It is easy to say because I made the climb.

No offense, but you're not a real great example. You're Crothian. Aside from the folks who ran/run these boards, you're perhaps the most recognized person around here.

I volunteered for the same reason others did - there have to be some choices. It was fairly easy to see who was likely to win before the voting started, but that's not a reason to give up.

Since I'm running well behind the pack, my wife has suggested I post the following:

Top Six Reasons to Vote for Umbran:

6. A genre awards show really needs a guy who looks like the bastard child of Rubeus Hagrid and Legolas on the panel.

5. He's represented by an Evil Lawyer, and so is the right guy to have around if anyone gets litigious.

5a. He uses words like "litigious" in casual conversation.

4. You'd be supporting education by helping a poor school teacher pay his way to GenCon.

3. The Computer wants you to vote for him, Friend Citizen.

2. He's a physicist. You really don't want him to lose, go mad, build a time machine and try to change history.

1. Because with a Gamer Chick that hot as his wife, he must be doing something right!

I am now, but it hasn't always been this way. That's my point, three years ago I wasn't any different then the rest of you. Another name on the boards that some people knew and other didn't.

And that's where I was last year at this time. When I ran, I had less than 900 posts on the boards and didn't really consider myself a high profile member. And I was elected, much to my surprise. It happens.
