ENnies for miniatures?

I just feel that miniatures are increasing in popularity and use in rpgs. I personally have always used them in my rpg games (20+ years). There are some really great products out there and artists and companies who should get a little recognition by others in the industry who are not obsessional collectors like myself.

If the ENnies is not an appropriate outlet for this, who else could provide this recognition?

I am not very familiar with Origins. Is this something we should discuss with them?

I also dislike the idea of excluding Games Workshop or even the Clix. I use Todd McFarlanes new Dragons along with my D&D prepaints along with my personally painted Reaper dwarves and Games Workshop Chaos Warriors. Good quality is evident and voting would bear this out. If it is useable for rpg sessions and enough people like it and vote for it, that should qualify it.

I made a distinction in my list of categories above for prepainted and unpainted because I do not think the quality between the two compare nor do 3d cardstock cutouts and resin cast buildings.

The Origins Awards have a couple miniature categories, I believe. Best Individual Mini, Best Miniatures Game, and one or two others.

You can't include everything in the awards. I personally sometimes use Lego minifigs in my game, and have on occasion used wooden building blocks or even Hot Wheels cars. Should they be included, just because someone uses them? I don't think the answer for that is yes, therefore the McFarlane Dragons and other toys, cool as they are (and I own a few), can't be eligible. And the other games that you name from GW and Wizkids, while they have applications in RPGs, are designed as miniature games. So they are out.

Our mandate, handed down from GenCon LLC, is that we are to be the RPG Awards, and only the RPG Awards. No miniatures awards, no other game awards. RPGs, and specifically told that we cannot have a miniatures category. There is no way around that.

A line has to be drawn somewhere. We have been given that line, and we work with it.

So even though you would be judging a mini on it's merits as a roleplaying aid, the fact that it is originally intended for use in a minis game disqualifies it? Just seems counter intuitive to me.

Counter-intuitive or not, the rules for the awards, as handed down by GenCon, is that the awards have to be RPG-specific and CANNOT move into non-RPG territory... such as fiction, wargames, mini games, collectible mini games, collectible card / dice games, card games, dice games, etc.

Lets step away from minis for another example of crossover like this:

Back in the last days of the CyberPunk 2020 RPG, a book was released with the rules to be able to use the netrunner card game cards as an accessory for netrunning in the game. Suddenly, netrunner cards become both an RPG accessory -AND- a collectable card game. However, since the cards were developed and sold as a CCG, they would not be eligible for the ENnies RPG award for best aid or accessory.

(again - dealing with my interpretation of things - I am not a member of the ENnies board of directors, nor a judge, just an observer with a lot of inside information)

Even Charles Ryan expressively mentioned that minis were not included when he presented the sales figures of D&D compared to other RPGs. This means that the brand manager of D&D draws a clear line between the category "RPG" and the category "minis". I think this is an important distinction.

The ENnies want to go the way from a strictly d20 award to a general RPG award. Making minis part of the ENnies would be contrary to this goal, as most RPGs don't make use of minis.

Minis used to be a part of Gen Con.
