ENnies Nominations for 2004

The reasons are many why not but really the only one that matters is Gen Con wants us to only be RPGs. They were kind enough to make us their official awards, and all they asked (that I know of) is that we stick to RPGs. And that we open up the awards to non d20 as well. ;)
Ah!
I was completly ignorant of that fact (obviously). No more arguments from me on this matter. If Gencon wants the awards to stick to RPG's, then ya cant very well argue with that!.

If you look at any awards ceremony that takes place at a convention, I think you will find few, if any, that occur on the last day of the convention. Why? People leave early. Sunday night most people are wll on their way home. When people leave, you have no audience. I doubt people will stick around just to see the awards presented. Having the awards the night before the biggest day of the convention (Saturday) allows for the winners to take advantage of the publicity. What good would it do to win the award on Sunday night? No promotion at the convention, no discussion by fans the next day, no way to capitalize on the win. Just for comparison, the Hugo Awards are the centerpiece of the World Science Fiction Convention. they are handed out on Friday night, and have always been handed out on the Friday of the convention. Friday is the biggest night, and Sturday is the biggest day. Thats when the people are there, thats when you give out the awards if you want to have any draw for an audience.
Very good points, things I didnt consider. Thank you for enlightening me.
If onsite voting becomes a reality, it would obviously only take place thursday..

Perhaps another option then.

the Official Gencon site and Forums should link to the voting.

In fact, posting the poll in their forums THIS year as soon as its up, is not a bad idea at all. The gencon forums are fairly active.

To expand on that, maybe it wouldnt be a bad idea if all Enworlders took it upon themselves to post about the Ennies at any other boards they frequented. I dont mean spam, that would just annoy people. But If Enworlders are frequent chatters on other forums, a notice about the vote and about the ennies doesnt sound like a bad proposition?

Id say a "template" message should be drawn up, but it might be better for individuals to use their own words.

I for one, will post about the Ennies at nycgeek and other places i frequent.

I could have sworn someone said the awards were already finished and all that remained was attaching the winners plaques, which they claimed was a simple task....

They is a he, one man crew here. And the components are finished, that is far from a finished award. :)

This is one of the few (I saw few cause we just aren't that big) unsung heroes of the ENnies. alsih2o does great work and needs to get more praise for it. So, here's a big thanks from me Mark.

Thieves Quarter made the cut

I'd just like to toss out my thanks to the ENnie judges and community for finding "Thieves' Quarter" worthy of recognition. I know it's cliche, but it truly is an honor just to be nominated...especially when this is the first book that's ever had my name on the cover.

To receive two nominations for my first-ever sourcebook writing credit and my first qualifying cartography assignment is quite gratifying.

The Game Mechanics and I put a lot of energy into the book, and I just wanted to give a public thanks for the nod of approval. :)

Man, am I the only one that senses the ghostly specter of the Origins Awards hovering over this debate? Don't get me wrong, I'm honored to be nominated. But a lot of this sounds dangerously close to the kind of politicking that makes the Origins Awards such a debatable ceremony in the eyes of so many.

I'm a little ignorant on the Orgins Awards and why they are so unpopular. Its ironic since I always go to Origins though. I hear people complain about them but its rare theat I get a good feel for what the Origins Awards is doing wrong in peoples eyes. That should also help me understand how the ENnies are politicking here. So would you or someone be able to explain why the Origin awards are seen as they are? Thanks.

The Hugo awards are a huge, multilayered award system, and have various levels of voters.

As I understand it, there are not "various levels of voters". There are two different levels of con membership that allow you a vote. And you must have that membership prior to a certain date if you wish to vote. But once you have the vote, it is like everyone else's votes. There are not levels of votes of which I'm aware.

As far as I can remember from the WorldCons I have attended, voting does not take place onsite, it is accomplished by ballot prior to the convention.

This is true.

So, it is not as simple as all attending members of the convention get to vote on the awards.

I didn't say it was. I said that if GenCon wanted a broader awards system, they'd need to set up something like the Hugos, because EN World is not respected for it's expertise in the broader realm. Simplicity didn't enter into it :)

Memberships to the convention can be purchased far in advance, and in ordser ot nominate and vote, you need to have a membership.

Not quite correct, as given in your quote.

In order to nominate, you need to either have a membership to the WorldCon at which the award will be given, or had one to the previous WorldCon.

In order to make a final vote, you need to have a membership to the WorldCon at which the award will be given. This year, final voting closed on July 31st, iirc. Just a month before the con. So, you needed to have your membership a whole whopping month beforehand to vote. That's not so bad.

Compare to the Ennies - voting for the nomination panel happened when? How long before the con will final voting occur?

GenCon currently is set up on a short lead time for memberships, so while the Hugo voting system might be a good aspiration for the GenCon awards, it's not likely to occur any time soon.

Fine. So GenCon won't have a solid broad awards program soon. That doesn't bother me.

Yes. But, if he had ever heard our singing, I think he'd probably choose to remain unsung. We're gamers, and carrying a tune is not one of the entry requirements, even for playing bards :)

Would it be an option to host parts of the Ennies voting on different sites? What sort of segments of the rpg community does rpg.net tend to attract, for example? I never visit there, but for example if they have a wider non-d20 audience, we could do all the voting on non-d20 awards there.
