Still, such persuits and interests seem strange for his background.

I'm not so sure. The guy grew up running freight from system to system all his life. I'm guessing that he gets to see a wide variety of environments and landscapes. Seems very natural that freighters spend a few days on every world they encounter just to get off of the ship. Given that a lot of places might not have a culture with things that interest everyone, hobbies that include an outdoor element would be preferential, since you'd expect every place to have rock formations. Never disappointed when your hobbies include things that don't rely on someone else to create your fun. :)

Possibly, but I don't think that might be the case. These guys seem like deep-space truckers or something to me. They spend most of their time hauling freight back and forth. I don't know how much R&R the crews are allowed when they hit their different stops (but then this is the Trek universe, so who knows...).

Like I said earlier, I think the writiers/producers have given Travis a hobby of enjoying extreme sports or something. I wouldn't be surprised if we see him bungee jumping in a future episode. :D

Hehehe. Deep Space Truckers. That just makes me giggle. I smell a spin-off. ;)

Forget the bungee jumping. In a special upcoming ep we'll Travis tie 2 long ropes, one to each nacell, around his waist and he'll go "space surfing" at impulse (or Warp 1 if they want to get rid of the character). :p
