Enterprise 10-09-02

well, they've already been to Riiza (sp?), it's just a matter of time 'til other 'next gen' races show up (betazoids, etc.)

John Crichton - have they actually used the term 'Federation'? i haven't seen all the episodes, but i only recall them mentioning star fleet

Umbran - what's to say the station itself didn't send that message? (:D - more creepy-ness!)

Pardon me, John C. if I field this one. If memory serves they've not mentioned the Federation. At this point there is only the Vulcans and Earth, as far as Earth knows, that are working closely together. I imagine they could have some cool episodes with Earth meeting some other races being "held back" by the Vulcan High command. :D

I like the idea that it was the station that sent the "garbled" message. Makes it much more sinister, indeed. Good one! :)

Yes, the garbled message could well have been sent by the station.

That would have been a bit of a gamble, though. Assume, for the moment, that the station could not project false sensor images very far away from itself. That means the Tellarite freighter was actually present, and might well have been able to tell Enterprise, "Hey, we didn't say that!" Playing impostor while the real thing is present isnt exactly smart...

As to "the Federation" being mentioned - I may be mis-remembering, but I believe crewman Daniels (the time traveller from "Shockwave") lets the term slip while he has Capt. Archer away from Enterprise.

No problem. :)

And yes, the Federation is not yet formed. I was just using it as an example and counterpoint.

As far as the Federation goes, its a fantasy that humans would ever be able to accomplish something like that anyway.

Yeah, well faster than light travel is also a fantasy. No point in griping about one pipe dream when there's a flat scientific impossibility looming at you, now is there? :)

True. LOL :)

That post was less a gripe and more of a "heart of Trek" rant. I have no problems with the future they present as I accept those improbable things as I do all other sci-fi reaches in order to be entertained (and maybe dream just a bit). Also, given that Trek is more science-fantasy than science-fiction, it goes with the territory.

Now that you mention it, I do seem to recall crewman Daniels saying something about that while they were trapped in the utterly destroyed future. IIRC, (now) Archer replies that he really shouldn't be saying anything along those lines.

As an aside, I remember crewman Daniels making a rather startling statement about the lack of actual hardcopy/paper/printed books, and then the two of them finding a library full of books. *shrug*

... yup, but iirc he was completely surprised by the lack of technology in the library ... and all the books

Yup, sorry, that was the point I was getting around to making. I was wondering how they would justify (in their episode writing bibles), that despite there supposedly being a destroyed time travel facility, the electronic library that Daniels expected to find was full of regular old books. I wonder how much of that change was due to their need for a convenient reference source in a place where none of their usual technology could still be used to further the plot.

I'm hoping they explain that in the future, but I doubt they will.

i'll betcha they will, since the 'temporal cold war' has been Enterprise's meta-plotline so far (i just keeps going, and going, and going...)
