Roman, I'm willing to give you whips if you'd rather have that. I'm gonna give two books away, one to you, one to John Q, and they can both be whips if whips is what you want. If you do prefer Spiked Chains, though, just let me know.

Yes, I think I would prefer Whips, but if that is impossible Spiked Chains are more than fine. Thanks a lot RangerWickett and John Q. Mayhem!

By the way, I can't offer anything in the way of prizes, but if someone wants to write a review of Whips, I'd be grateful, regardless of the score. I honestly want to know what people think.

Things I have learned from this experience:
  • Don't tell people up front what race they're fighting against. The urge to have bane weapons or favored enemies may be too strong.
  • Whip wielders love spiked locked gauntlets, and it is foolish for them not to have them. If they lose the whip, they can still punch with spikes.
  • A back-up rapier is not actually that useful when you're only fighting one foe. Against multiple weak foes it might be useful, but against a single tough foe you're going to want to spring attack, and the rapier will never come into play.
  • Two-weapon fighting with a rapier is silly. A short sword is a better idea, since the penalty for using a light weapon is so much less. But a short sword just doesn't look as cool.
  • When up against a person with a longspear or glaive, get up in the their face and force them to retreat, incurring attacks of opportunity. When up against a spiked chain, run away.
  • Combat Reflexes isn't as cool when your opponent's Tumble check is +14 or higher. Always remember to declare your dodge target, and to say when you're tumbling.

RangerWicket,

Thanks for giving me the good sport win. I tried to stick with what the character would do and only real twink was picking elves as favored enemy. Should have given him a ranged or reach weapon as a secondary weapon to avoid all those AoOs, but his primary goal is to get next to his opponent, rage and FA. Not much I could do about AC, even with a few more points, you would still have hit most of the time. Original concept was a high strength / low dex fighter with paired BS - so he needed ranger levels for TWF. Although with the high point buy for this fight, I could have given him a high enough dex for TWF and replaced the ranger levels with fighter levels to get TWF feat so he could have worn heavier armor - but then he would have been slower and Quillathe would have been able to keep out of his reach easier. In the end, if the dice had been a bit nicer to me, it could have gone the other way.

I am willing to post short reviews of both books once I have had a look through them. Let me know where to send/post them.

There's a reviews section to the website. If you see the "EN World" with a down-pointing arrow next to it, sort of above and to the left, there's a drop-down menu that includes D&D/D20 Reviews. I think if you're logged in it's easy to post a review. I haven't done it in a while, though.

I'm a little embarrassed that my 'ringer' has been doing so poorly. Heck, if you'd held your bastard sword in two hands instead of one, the extra Strength damage alone would've beat me. It requires a lot of precision to use a piece of leather as a weapon, even one with blades on it.

Good fight, though. Hopefully you'll get the books soon.

I have been reading the threads with interest and have a question.

How do you think the Elven Ranger would do against some type of ranged specialist?

Are there any cool whip defenses against ranged weapons?

Just curious.

Against a ranged specialist she'd close and disarm her opponent. Ranged vs. melee is always a hard fight.

There's also the Third Hand feat, which lets you use your whip like a free hand, so if you have deflect arrows you can deflect even if you don't have a free hand normally.

Just received the books. Thanks again. Will take a look at them over the weekend and hopefuly post reviews sometime next week.
