First Post
so, i have been away from my studio a lot lately....a friend who owns a gallery/giftshop just purchased a new home, and has asked me to watch her shop for a while while she paint/carpets/revels in her new hottub...

meantime i am watching the shop in full geek mode, core rulebooks out, reading up and a very old lady approaches me and asks if i play........

now i am unsure how to respond, but say yes. this lady(turns out she is 86!) says her great grandson invited her to play. to humor her i ask if she did...her reply?

"i have a 4th lvl bard i based on benny goodman" !!!!

i am overjoyed! she is in a bi-weekly game with her ggson and some of his friends, and her "boyfriend" plays too!

repeat to self- "i will never be too old to try something new" "i will never be too old to game!"

Oh, My Dear Lord, That's Great. :D

Thank you for sharing that with us!

That one I have GOT to share with my group.

I smiled. I'm still smiling. I think I may be smiling for long while, and even when I am not smiling, I shall think of this and smile. I was just speaking to someone about continuing to game even when I am older. This gives me great hope and has restored a little faith in me regarding growing older as yet another birthday fast approaches. Thank you for sharing that wonderful tale. And, here's to bards based on Benny Goodman!

I got my grandmother to play once. It would have been a better experience if I was more experienced and/or 3e had been out at that point, but she at least pretended to enjoy it.

She's not in her eighties, though. Or her seventies, for that matter.

If I recall correctly, she played an elven fighter.

Hey, that's wonderful! I wonder how my DMing skills will be in 50 years' time, assuming that I don't get killed by asteroids. Probably |\/|4D and 1337.

great story! i wonder, though, as we all start to age, how many retirement homes 40 years from now will be witness to bluehairs rolling D20's?

No fair!

My grandma is dead convinced that I worship Satan down in the steam tunnels by sacrificing virgins and stuff.

I tried to explain to her how roleplaying was just telling a story, with a DM acting as a guide and judge. She said it was satanic to have someone decide what you can and can't do.

I tried to explain how it was just a game. She said games are satanic. Nevermind the fact that she spends all her time playing bridge and bingo.

*sigh*
