ENWGS FAQ - "Will it generate new customers?"

I'm one of the "new customers." Never have cared for most of the vendors out there, and heck yes, the slow loads at most turn me off. I'm a browser, but I'm also on dialup. Makes for a particularly hard sell.

I've been tempted many times to buy from RPGNow, etc, but the only time I ever actually plunked down a credit card was for my ENW CSA. [I think that was RPGNow.]

You know you can change your settings not to show all the graphics/thumbnails. Then the pages are really fast at RPGNow.com

Just go to CONFIGURE.

Strangely I find the ENWorld store to be the slower site. (Upwards of 12 seconds to load even with a cable modem - while RPGnow is pretty much just there) The ENWorld forum has always seemed a bit sluggish to me, as well.

Location and "Route" can also play a factor in how long it takes something to load. The more 'hops' between point A and Point B, even if each one is only a few hundred milliseconds, can add up. It's one of the odditities of the internet.

So what I imagine happens is that it seems to take longer for you to "Connect" but the page itself displays rather fast by comparison. This is part of the more-detailed product information that we ask for - the publishers upload actual smaller thumbnails to be displayed on various pages instead of a "Cover Image" that gets resized to appear smaller - the file size remains the same.

It seems like it's related to load. Right now, at 11:00 eastern time, both sites are responding about the same for me. Sometimes during the day when the server is really busy, the enworld site as a whole loads slower, forums, front page, store and all.

We actually ask publishers to upload smaller thumbnails in addition to the normal cover images. This will change soon as I intend to automate it to create 80 width and 40 width covers automatically. But, this definately seems to be helping the product lists and displays to load faster.
