ENWorld Adventure Path: A Modest Proposal

It sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I run my own teamspeak server currently for World of Warcraft, and have IRC'd for years. Also I have been playing D&D since 1977. I'd be happy with SWD20 or D&D D20. My creative "skills" as far as ideas go are atrocious, but my ability to balance content, create new rules/feats/etc, and edit for spelling and grammar are excellent.

How much time per week do you see this taking?

Like several others, I'd be glad to help out in the editing/proofing/crunching department. I'm also a decent expository writer (I think) and would be glad to help out with descriptions, NPC background, etc.

Having said that, I have to agree with Ant. My "decent" writing may in fact be terrible (how would I know :) ) so I assume each adventure in the path could be doled out to someone who has an actual track record, and that person would be responsible for accepting/rejecting/editing contributions from those of us with less experience.

And tally another vote for "generic" fantasy. The Slaadi work for me as big bad guys, too.

Ah. I really just want to say that this project seems a lot of fun. I just wish I could help out. I'm certainly going to keep tabs on this thread to see where you are going with this.

Of course you will need macguffins whatever happens. Wouldn't it be great if the macguffins are to a large extent people? I'm not too keen on collecting gems to put on a sword hilt or assembling a golem one appendage at a time. I'd love to see adventures about escort duty, bodyguarding, kidnappings, freeing of slaves, and the like.

1 - The Unlife: A foe that seeks the destruction of all life, without exception. It does not seek to conquer or dominate - but to destroy, simpliciter.

The list is endless. What appeals to you?

I have always wanted to try my hand at something along these lines: A high-level Wizard creates some Warforged-Golem like construction that assumes sentinence ends up spinning out of control, making legions of followers just like it and threatening the race that created it. Think Borg, think that newer Crichton book Prey, etc... A weird end-of-Akira hodgepodge of limbs and gears and brains and iron bulging and oozing on a throne at the center of its domination.

Of course, there are only a few of this "created race" who drop out of the proliferation struggle and see the "error" of their ways who come from (sneak out of) their wasted homeland and warn other races of the impendiing expansion. They would make great, conflicted NPCs.

They could be Slaad-powered in some way, and it would give generic-DMs a chance to really decimate a standing section of the setting they use, and then have the heroes attempt to save it, or set it right again.

Just intial thoughts that hit me after reading... Count me in for whatever work is available. This idea, another idea, any idea at all.

Ok. I've set up an IRC channel for anyone interested. Join in and we can chat about possible plots and metaplots and all other matters of any kind in relation to the project.

No set time for a formal "meeting" yet. We are still feeling our way out on this for a while still and I don't want to exclude anyone by making them feel they "missed" the meeting at this point.

The IRC channel is on psionics.net channel: #ADVPATH

In order to join the IRC discussion, please do the following

1 - download and install an IRC client. A good shareware client to use and the "internet standard" is mIRC. You can get it at www.mirc.com

2 - After installing the client and filling in some FAKE user info (in particular, do not post your real e-mail address in you identifying panel in mIRC unless you want to start receiving lots of spam), do the following:

in the bottom of the main status window type:

/server chat.psionics.net

That will log you on to the IRC server. Then type in the bottom of the same window:

/join #ADVPATH

That's it. You are there. See ya online. I'll be idling in the channel most evenings this week.

*sigh* the IP Police ride in.

Well, that's awfully harsh. I wasn't trying to rain on any one's parade, simply trying to point out what seemed to me to be a valid concern if you're planning on releasing it here as you described. Generally the powers that be here try to keep things fairly legit. You're certainly not going to bother me by writing something with others' IP, I was just trying to avoid a whole let of work resulting in disapointment if it ends up that it can't be hosted here and made available to the public as is your stated goal. At any rate, I have no desire to derail this or start an argument or anything, so proceed as you will.

No argument. The SRD does make sense.

Forgive me. I DO see so many of the IP references with OGC so often, the nature of the discussion frequently borders on the pedantic.

Cool Ideas

Some great ideas posted so far! I for one would like to see an extra-planar story arc. The Slaadi are a good choice. There are many other extra planar creatures that would work as well. I wouldn't worry about the CR so much, since we can start the adventure with minions of the slaadi, and peel back the layers of the onion as we go.

Can I propose that we extend the scope of the project a little to include a few levels of epic play, like up to 25th level. I know there are many who do not use the epic rules, but I think it can be an invaluable tool to DMs. A lot of people don't play epic levels because of the work load, or they are intimidated by the power level. By adding an epic level adventure or two to the scope of this project we have a chance to show how easy the transition from low levels really is. If we design the story arc correctly, we can make the epic adventures related to the main story, but not required. That way if a DM has no desire to play the epic adventures, the story conclusion will play out at level 20.

Looking forward to this project and to working with so many talented gamers!
