I used to play miniatures games strating with Airfix and Matchbox plastic figures, but after that buying metals from Minifigs, Ral Partha, Lamming, Essex Miniatures, etc. Western Skirmish games with 54mm plastic figures from Airfix and Brittains.

Board games - Metagaming microgames including Ogre, GEV, and Black Hole, Avalon Hill games including Squad Leader (much played) with the first two supplements (never bought GI-Anvil of Victory), Source of the Nile, Flight Leader, Up Front (card game) and Ambush.

Managed to play SL last year and its still great.

If any of you are going to be at GenCon, maybe it's time to dust off some of those boxes.... I know I'd be up for it.

I haven't seen Third Riech mentioned...

I should have mentioned that; my introduction to resource management, a critical facet of strategy that I still stink at.

Metagaming microgames including Ogre, GEV, and Black Hole

I still have a large pile of microgames. I was introduced to Melee and Wizard before D&D; they were my bridge to RPGs. A lot of Steve Jackson's early stuff too: Raid on Iran, One-Page Bulge.

Lots of early S&T games too: Frederick the Great, WolfPack, CA.

Some of them seem to be turning to Collector's Items and I am sorely tempted to unload a bunch on E-Bay (especially since I still have a bunch of shrink-wrapped ASL stuff).

ASL stuff still seems to be fetching good prices on ebay. A lot of the other AH and SPI stuff peaked a couple years ago and are cheaper now. (The people who wanted 'em, got 'em.) I'm still picking up odd games here and there that I always wanted (Air War). I'm figuring I'll spend my retirement playing SPI's War in the Pacific, but I still haven't gotten a copy of that. (It was running $500 mint a couple years ago. Now it's down closer to $300, but still more than I can justify.)

Napoleonics, Johny Reb, Chainmail, and a smattering of other miniatures games that didn't stick.

Boardgaming wargames: Civilization, Shogun/Samurai Swords, Risk (does that even count?), Supremacy, Fortress America, Risk 2210, Top Gun, and a whole bunch that I only half remember.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got an itch to find a tape measure. *sigh* I just wish my current group of pals loved these games as much as I do.

Old Grognard here too. Used play Afrika Korps, Russian Campaign, Squad Leader but now all I play is Advanced Squad Leader nowaday's. ASL is an awesome game, you can overrun troops with King Tigers, Flame those pesky russians in Stalingrad at the Red October Factorys, Launch banzai attacks with your Japanese units against entrenched Marines, great stuff indeed!

Also, MMP is putting Starter Kits for ASL, barebone rules to help people understand ASL a bit better with only a few pages of rules instead of trying to plow through a huge ass rule book:

More then likely you will find an opponent, here in Chicago we have a huge Advanced Squad Leader community too. If anybody in the Chicagoland area wants to learn ASL send me a PM and I'll be more then happy to teach ya.

I'm not a grognard, and never was a war gamer, but the folks who got me involved in D&D were. I've always wanted to give wargames a try, but don't have the time. Recently, however, I have had a chance.

Also, last year at GenCon, I played Reaper's Warlord game, and it too was a blast. You might want to check it out at a local Con.

Finally, if you are playing Pirates of the Spanish Main, there are some naval wargame rules out on the net, using the PoSM ships. A 1.5" hex mat would be handy. I played one called Letters of Marque, but can't seem to find it right now.

Actually, I think there's a couple members of our group who would do very well at old-fashioned board wargames...

I played a few of the old AH games mentioned here. I didn't see Midway mentioned yet, but maybe I just missed that one. I wasn't really a wargamer too much, though -- only played a handful of games a handful of times. I got into D&D more because I liked to read fantasy than because I liked to play miniatures wargames. I still kinda resent the miniatures game within the roleplaying game at times.

I enjoy a good wargame every now and then, though I prefer when there are other aspects to the game as well (I really like Advanced Civilization). However, I got in the other way around: started with RPGs, and since the places that sold RPGs also sold wargames me and my buddies tried some of those out and found we liked them.
