Er, I think DriveThruRPG destroyed my computer...

So, I downloaded Acrobat Reader 6 and the DriveThru freebies. That went fine, but now I can't run explorer. I'm not talking Internet Explorer; I'm talking "Look at my C drive" explorer. It tells it has performed an illegal operation. I've restarted my computer several times and that doesn't help. I can't even open up the control panel to uninstall Acrobat! What's up?

What version of Windows?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode?

If its Win2k or WinXP have you tried booting using the "Last Known Good Configuration"?

This wouldn't be your Win98 machine you mentioned here that you said was giving you weird errors before installing Acrobat Reader 6 would it?

It would, in fact. It's long overdue for a format, I think. But I don't think I have the Windows CD, so I'd have to buy one (XP, I suppose, which, as Psion pointed out, means I'll also need Norton or something).

Maybe this DRM thing is the hypotherical straw shattering the hypothetical back of my poor 8-gig hard drive.

I would say that Reader 6.0 was the straw, not the DRM material.

It's kinda unfair to lay this one at the feet of DTRPG.

(I'm reasonably certain your post was at least in part tongue-in-cheek though. :) )

Well, y'know. As long as I can blame someone or something besides myself, who has not formatted or updated or replaced for about 4 1/2 years, I'm happy.

Actually, the DRM would be the cause, with its use of ActiveX components to restrict printing. I've seen this occur with other software that installs ActiveX controllers for OS level system abilities.

Cant say I've ever seen ActiveX component installation cause a crash (and I've been doing this for a while now). Not saying it isnt possible (with PCs, esp Windows, anything is possible), just can't say I've seen it.

Actually that is a component that Internet Explore has a handle on... I've had corrupted Internet Explorer files cause the same problem. But usually that doesn't bother the control panel. That is a problem.
Versions of Internet Explorer prior to 6, when you chose add/remove in the control panel, also gave an option for repair. This generally fixes such problems.
See if you can get to the proper control panel by running
c:\windows\system32\appwiz.cpl
