Errata or just the FAQ

Charles Ryan mentioned awhile back on the d20 Modern boards at WotC that they are holding off on the official errata for a bit until they collect as much of it as they can. For now, go with the unofficial FAQ - it's an excellent resource for all of Charles's rulings, clarifications and errata comments to date.

Well, I don't know about you guys, but wouldn't it be better to give us what errata they have found and their corrections now, and then update it once every month?

Or would that be frustrating to gamers?

Paying 40 dollars for a book that gets corrected shortly afterwards is frustrating to gamers. Getting the latest errata is simply a matter of looking at it or not. In which case, I'd prefer to get the info as it comes. This could be done on an official errata page, with pdf releases occassionaly.

This is an issue I've gone round and round about with WotC since the beginning of 3E. :) But they, in my opinion, use the errata document as their official bible for how to edit/change the book for the second printing FIRST and as a method of communicating corrections to the fans who already bought the book SECOND. So they'll likely keep collecting the official errata until a second printing is necessary.

This is all fustrating. I would prefer that they come out with an errata once it fills a page and up date once a month if nessicary. I mean if they find that a comma was missing from page 25, that's not a big deal. But if they miss entire entries for items (the benelli shotgun) then they should make an effort to get that info out to fans ASAP. People bought the book and have a right to have what they thought they were buying. Everyone knows that their will be mistakes, that's the way of things, but it's how you go about making those corrections that matters.

The info IS out to fans! What do you think makes up the FAQ? They are answering questions on a daily basis, on their own board, for everyone to see. I think your real complaint is format related - you want it in errata format. Well, for now, the FAQ will have to do. It's all there - it's even indexed, you just have to look a little bit is all.

While we are grateful for the albeit unofficial FAQ, Mistwell, we won't exactly know if this is one designer's attempt at a correction or the entire game design team's unanimous decision on the correction.

Don't get me wrong. Mr. Charles Ryan is the most vocal of the game design team who is willing to help us out by answering our rules questions. And for that, we are grateful. Then again, his answer yesterday could be superseded by the team's today. Of course, I'm sure he has run the error by his team to get the most apropriate correction. Then again, I'm not monitoring him.

Still, the fact that Wizards' SOP is to wait until a second printing is warranted before they can release the errata is doing more harm to the product, as it will frustrate the consumers of the first printing product. It has gotten to the point where it is more wise to wait for the second printing of the book before they're willing to invest $40. That means less people will buy the first printing with initial errors, less people to spot the errors that should have been spotted in the editing & proofreading stage of publishing in the first place, which means no second printing is warranted.

Talk about a sad domino effect.

I've said it once and I'm going to say it again, Wizards: improve your editing.

I'm not attacking you. Infact I'm greatful that you compiled and posted it for us all. I'm upset at WotC for not doing it. I mean shesh, we all payed about 40 buck for the book. I accept that there is going to be errors, there always are in books of this type. It seems that the fans are always the ones picking up the slack. They don't have a screen, so a fan makes one (thanks Bagpuss). Hey maybe I am whining.
