D&D (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Errata

For sure. 80%+ of the people playing D&D 5E now probably don't even know about 4E's rapid-fire rebalancing (which I kind of enjoyed and kind of loathed lol).
Yep. On the one hand it was great to get balance changes put almost immediately into the DDI Character Builder so we could use them... but on the other hand, that speed and precision towards getting the balance "right" meant that many folks over there started getting so into the weeds over balance that we ended up getting way more than we probably really needed-- rendering our hardcover books much more out-of-date faster than other times in the game's history.

One nice thing about this release is its timing, especially given the personnel changes occurring at WOTC. By releasing the errata now (and by releasing the SRD now), the game is formally "up to date" and (more importantly) available before the departure of both Perkins and Crawford.

If this happened next month, it would look like a response to their departure. As it is, Chris and Jeremy appear to be ensuring that the game is as they want it before they leave (and the SRD is available before WOTC execs interfere!).

Hurray.

I reckon they need to add Hidden as a condition so they don't have to stretch Invisible to include hidden creatures.

Also, here's a list of other things that could do with some errata:

Stunned condition: Needs to have "speed = 0" added back in so the Monk's Stunning Strike feature isn't wonky (currently if you fail the save, you can still move at full speed, whereas if you succeed, you can only move at half speed).

Blindness/Deafness: The print version of the PHB lists this spell's school as Transmutation, but it's listed as Necromancy on DDB. Not sure which is meant to be the correct one (it was Necromancy in 2014).

Conjure Minor Elementals should probably scale at every two levels like Spiritual Weapon.

Fabricate no longer specifies that you can't transmute living creatures or magic items. That phrasing should be added back in.

Flaming Sphere has a spell school discrepancy in both the print and DDB versions (the description indicates Conjuration, whereas the Druid, Sorcerer, and Wizard spell lists all indicate Evocation).

Otto's Irresistible Dance needs clarification that it has no effect on creatures immune to the Charmed condition. As it stands, they can still be affected on a successful save if not a failed one, which is utterly bonkers!

Spirit Guardians really needs to be once per round, not once per turn.

True Polymorph should not end early if the TPH disappear, and also it needs to have the ability to speak and cast spells added back in if the new form is capable of such. It's ridiculous that a humanoid true polymorphed into another humanoid species can't speak or cast spells!

No, it wasn't. It was corrections and clarifications only. They were clear. They weren't doing numbers changes for the sake of balance.

But that changed with I think the post-Tasha's errata, because a couple of the Tasha's (I think!) spells were just wacky in their original form. So it's not like it's a new-new change, but it's definitely confirmed that they're sticking with the post-Tasha's approach here, in that they're halving the scaling (a huge change for those spells), and changing how the Goliath ability functions to make it more useful.
The fix to the Goliath’s trait is no different to changing unarmed strikes to not be weapons. That was a big change in the first 2014 errata that they insisted was just correcting an error.

With the Goliath trait, it’s clear that was just something they missed when changing the way grappling worked.

@LaTia J I’ll second the thanks for participating in these discussions here.

Note that '24 Spiritual Weapon damage scales up every level:

"Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The damage increases by 1d8 for every slot level above 2."

Not to lean too hard into the "2024 bad" camp but this made me half glad I did not pre-order, buy the book or play 2024 when it came out after it was apparent that the Day 1 version already had some issues. I wonder when the next post-Errata printrun will be.

My guess is they just started it. Put the changes out as the next batch goes to the printer.

That said, it's still going to take a while before they are in circulation.

Same as it ever was. (Regardless of edition.)
