Yep. On the one hand it was great to get balance changes put almost immediately into the DDI Character Builder so we could use them... but on the other hand, that speed and precision towards getting the balance "right" meant that many folks over there started getting so into the weeds over balance that we ended up getting way more than we probably really needed-- rendering our hardcover books much more out-of-date faster than other times in the game's history. For sure. 80%+ of the people playing D&D 5E now probably don't even know about 4E's rapid-fire rebalancing (which I kind of enjoyed and kind of loathed lol).
The fix to the Goliath’s trait is no different to changing unarmed strikes to not be weapons. That was a big change in the first 2014 errata that they insisted was just correcting an error. No, it wasn't. It was corrections and clarifications only. They were clear. They weren't doing numbers changes for the sake of balance.
But that changed with I think the post-Tasha's errata, because a couple of the Tasha's (I think!) spells were just wacky in their original form. So it's not like it's a new-new change, but it's definitely confirmed that they're sticking with the post-Tasha's approach here, in that they're halving the scaling (a huge change for those spells), and changing how the Goliath ability functions to make it more useful.
Note that '24 Spiritual Weapon damage scales up every level:I reckon they need to add Hidden as a condition so they don't have to stretch Invisible to include hidden creatures.
Also, here's a list of other things that could do with some errata:
[...]
Conjure Minor Elementals should probably scale at every two levels like Spiritual Weapon.
Good point. I forgot about that.Note that '24 Spiritual Weapon damage scales up every level:
"Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The damage increases by 1d8 for every slot level above 2."
My guess is they just started it. Put the changes out as the next batch goes to the printer. Not to lean too hard into the "2024 bad" camp but this made me half glad I did not pre-order, buy the book or play 2024 when it came out after it was apparent that the Day 1 version already had some issues. I wonder when the next post-Errata printrun will be.
Same as it ever was.
