Errors from previous editions which got repeated.

I've been playing D&D for 30+ years, and I don't remember that. In fact, going back to 1Ed, plusses and other enchantments were the norm.

I do remember that if someone found a Cloak of Elvenkind (or Elven Cloak) in 1E (and pre-1E), it was the most awesome thing.

The 3E Cloak was pretty watered down until they got to the 3.5 Cloak which was even less spectacular, and finally the 4E Cloak is so mundane and non-special as to not even be worth discussing (and the mechanics for it are poor, +2 at level 7 for Stealth is a snooze, that's almost never going to help a PC be stealthy, 1 time in 10 over normal).

...or a 1e Ring of Invisibility! Awesomeness.

Or even the Invisibility spell. IIRC:

pre-1E forever until attacking (?)
1E up to 24 hours until attacking
2E up to 1 hour / level until attacking
3E up to 10 minutes / level until attacking
3.5 up to 1 minute / level until attacking
4E use a Standard Action to sustain until attacking

Then you have the problem that an Epic Destiny power gets replicated by a single item (actually, the item is even better than the power).

And even only getting a 50% or just 25% reduction of magic item prices would play havoc with 4Es balance curve (at least people seem to believe that).

Not to start an argument, but I don't think it would screw up the curve, so long as you're following the rules as written for creating and buying items. You can't create items above your level, and on-level items are pretty second-rate, not even available as treasure if you follow the treasure packets...

Reducing the cost just means more on-level items, not better items. Since you can only wear so many items and use so many dailies, short of some pretty egregious rules laywering, it's not all that worthwhile. You can have a lot of those handy wondrous items like bags o' holding and flying carpets, but... isn't that why you got the ability? I don't see the problem, I guess.

Maybe.
But the real threat is that in some future splatbook WotC will release some must have items and then this huge price reduction instantly amplifies the problem.

Something else to add to my list: 3d rules. I like that the 2d battlemat concepts are easier to grasp, but it would have been nice to have a 3d foundation for all those flyers and pit hazards.

As for the weapon discussion, I'm actually in the opposite camp of a lot of folks here: I would prefer weapon names be as culturally neutral as possible. That way, weapon names remain somewhat descriptive in English, and if I want to give variations different names, then so be it. But I will agree that falchions should probably have the stats of the current khopesh, and the military 2-h +2 2d4 heavy blade high crit should have been called something else. That would leave the khopesh as an Egyptian reskinning of the falchion, which I would consider more appropriate.
