Escaping Violent Players

My group will eat just before play begins (because some of us are coming straight from work to FLGS). No alcohol, because FLGS.

I must live a fortunate life; I have never had anybody resort to violence over an RPG in my presence.

As a side note, what is everyone's thought on drinking at the gaming table? Good idea? Bad idea? I personally don't do it- I don't even eat at the gaming table, nor have I gamed with anyone who does (drink) as of yet. Guess I don't like to mix my pleasures that way, but I do see a problem if people show up and drink, play, get unruly, etc. Obnoxious / violent drunks are the worst sort of people to have to deal with, especially when you're just trying to chillax and have some fun.
No game I've ever been in had a policy on drinking. Sometimes, there was an site restriction preventing it, like the meeting places was an office conference room or something). But aside from that, it's just never come up. I've had at least as many games with alcoholic drinks at the table as without, and no one has ever got drunk, violently or otherwise.

And more generally, nothing violent has ever occurred at any game I've played, either.

I would not have guessed that, just judging from your screen name....

:)

LOL. Yeah, fair call.

The handle harks back to the days when I was still a bar tender; when I regularly drank while I worked. I wanted a an avatar name that was a play on DnD.

And nowadays I barely drink at all.

No experiences like any of these. Thank the Gods!

Generally? Bad idea. Then again, a lot of my friends over the years get really unpleasant when intoxicated.

My face to face game is at a tavern with a club of 30 or so gamers, so we usually have 2-3 drinks per person, beer usually, it goes from 7 to 11, though we often hang out until midnight. Never had anyone get drunk and obnoxious, and only once was someone drunk enough, she sort of began to pass out, and spilled her drink across the table, that was a bummer.* The also serve food though, and not everyone drinks, some just eat.

*This is why with my setting I made, to have minimal graphics on the star maps, because they print up easily, and are not a big loss it they get stained.

Now, your friend should note that punishment is a poor method for getting behavior change. Positive feedback is better - I'd suggest to him that he get a little dice throne, upon which good rollers may sit as a recognition of their efforts.
This is a business opportunity. I see plenty of "dice jails" for sale on Etsy, you need to start selling "dice thrones"!!! :)

Many, many years ago, one of my fellow players asked the group if he could bring a new friend. New friend just wanted to watch us play to see if he might be interested in role-playing.

New friend got bored, went out to his truck, came back with an automatic assault rifle in pieces, and began to assemble it. He then curled up with it and took a nap. We were all so shocked and freaked out, nobody said anything the entire time! This new friend was never invited to anything ever again, gaming or otherwise.

Man, typing that up . . . . it sounds ridiculous and made up. All true, with perhaps details softened with time and memory loss . . . .

I suppose I should mention as well that my players in the early 90's generally arrived armed... someone uninvited popped in and wound up facing 6 firearms and 3 short-bladed weapons from 8 players. (one of the firearms had a bayonet.)

Another was following a player, who used a warning pattern on the door-buzer to say, "I'm being followed by a suspicious person."
between the building door and the apartment (maybe 30m?) we had 8 firearms aimed at the door, the friend came in and dove prone, and the following guy, who had a knife, stepped in, and was ordered down. He complied. He left in handcuffs, sans knife.
So, yeah, we don't want that crowd imbibing... guns and booze are a poor mix. Bad neighborhood, open holster law, and people taking advantage of it.

I'm no longer in touch with any of them.
