Essential's Heroic Knight -- not so sticky?

Shift, then charge.

Sure, but then stuck with basic attack and sometimes even that won't work. I (and the DM) have always found the fighter darn sticky. Especially when the baddies are trying to run away, but even in a pure fight. If there are two big bad guys, I can generally keep one focused on me.

The thing with the PHB fighter is there are a MILLION ways to make it much stickier. Some of those can apply to the Knight as well but with a selection of a variety of powers the fighter has somewhat of an edge there. From what I can see the difference is more that EVERY knight will be about equally sticky whereas with fighters there is more of a trade off between damage output and stickiness.

I think you're going to find they both fill their role about equally well. Just like Wardens and fighters are pretty equal as well even though they mark and punish differently.

While true, there are a few issues. First the opponent can only shift. If your allies are farther than 1 square from the baddy, he can't get to them.

If the knight is in his "slows on a hit" stance, then this applies to the knight as well.

Also most monsters are only mildly inconvenienced by having to use basic attacks.
