Essentrials-only, what'd your party be?

Klaus

First Post
So, using only Essentials, what would your party composition be like?

Controller - Ranger (Hunter: Bow or Crossbow), Wizard (Mage: Enchantment, Evocation, Illusion, Pyromancy)
Defender - Fighter (Knight: Longsword or Hammer), Paladin (Cavalier: Sacrifice or Valor)
Leader - Cleric (Warpriest: Earth, Storm or Sun), Druid (Sentinel: Spring or Summer)
Striker - Assassin (Executioner: Red Scales or League of Whispers), Fighter (Slayer: Sword or Axe), Ranger (Scout: Axe or Sword), Rogue (Thief), Warlock (Hexblade: Fey, Infernal or Star)

Dragonborn, Drow, Dwarf, Eladrin, Elf, Half-Elf, Halfling, Half-Orc, Human, Tiefling.

So, 4 characters, what would your party be?

Not really sure what you're asking here.
It would likely depend on who I was playing with and what sort of game it was.

If I were just to come up with a party out of thin air though... hmm...

Halfling Slayer with the shortbow hunter feat, high dex specializing in ranged combat.
Human Cavalier of sacrifice, with one of the mounts from Dragon magazine, possibly born in a manger.
Halfling Mage, Enchanter.
Drow Warpriest, Earth domain.

(I'll admit, the two halflings may have to do with having specific miniatures I really want to use.)

Our group has been playing Essentials only, actually.

Campaign 1: Hexblade (me,) Hunter, Knight, Warpriest of Sun, Thief
Campaign 2: Scout (me,) Sentinel, Cavalier

Seems like we're working on trying everything! I really like the Hexblade, and while I don't like the Scout as much, it seems like a better striker.

EDIT: My Hexblade pact is the Fey Lady of the White Well pact. It's a Dark Sunish campaign, he vowed to help her escape the well she's trapped in because she promised to bring growth back to the world. He talks to her frequently, usually asking permission for things, by peering into placid pools of water and speaking, but looks like he's just talking to himself (and just might be!)

When you say "Essentials only", do you mean literally only builds from those books, or do you mean only material from those books? Because some builds look quite different when you kit them out with feats and weapons from the other books. Slayers want Fullblades, Knights want Craghammers or Mordenkrads, Thie[f|ve]s want Backstabber, etc.

Using the options in the first post. Feats, weapons, etc are just gravy. The Slayer with a Fullblade is a Fighter (Slayer: Sword), but what's his race?

Controller: Tiefling or Gnome Enchanter
Defender: Half-Elf Paladin of Sacrfice.
Leader: Human Warpriest, Sun Domain.
Striker: Halfling Thief.

I can't speak for hypotheticals, but in two weeks our regular group is starting Epic (we started at level 1) and for the sake of the story/change of pace, our party kind of turned all-essential, with one exception. So yeah, I cheated a bit but since it's a real party, I figured you'd be lenient on my crimes against your thread.

Controller: Human Mage, Shifter Ranger (was Seeker)
Defender: Drow Cavalier of Valour (Switched from normal Paladin due to simplicity)
Leader: Half-Elf Sentinel Druid (Was a Shaman but fluff/other stuff makes this a natural shift)
Striker: Hexblade Tiefling (with the "I want to marry an Archfey" Pact from Dragon/Lady of the White Well), and a Half-Orc Sorcerer that's not Essential, but hey, he was the 1st class to have Essential-type simple striker bonus damage, so thus I leave him in.

And there you go. It's going to be a bit surreal, jumping into Essentials at Epic. I've played the Hexblade a bit in the RPGA, but...well, yeah. Epic is...Epic.

Defender: Human Knight (he was an historian who received his knighthood as a reward for writing a flattering biography of a minor noble's ancestor; it went to his head)
Leader: Dwarf Warpriest (former sucessful tavern owner who sold everything and entered the priesthood after hearing a sermon by an itinerant preacher. He's a bit of a prude, now)
Striker: Halfling Thief (a former member of an elite royal guard--sort of a Scotland Yard Inspector--who was kicked off the force for refusing to plant evidence)
Controller: Eladrin Mage/Evocation Apprentice (she is the youngest daughter of the minor noble that granted Knighthood to the first character. Though non-Eladrin folk find her elegant and refined, those of her race think of her as a hopeless bumpkin, and she feels the sting of embarrassment for having to travel with non-Eladrin in her adventuring party.)
