Established rules for Vampires?

Ahhh...what do we have here? A cynicall yet completely unhelpful sideline shouter? :) Just teasin'. I find that the coup de gras method works well for me as a DM. I don't mess with the rules that much. You beat the vampire until he can't take it anymore, incapacitate him in any way you can, and stake him. Done. But I never said it was easy.

And I still think the adventure was a piece. :(

4 10th level characters through that Castle? I had five players, and one died and one was petrified, and the rest had to flee.

CDG a vampire? CDG seven vampires? Yeah, right...

My players had a blast, and I feel it was a great adventure

That's why it wasn't such a great adventure, IMO. SEVEN vampires, each a powerful adventurer in his/her own right, shouldn't have been so easily wiped out in one relatively short adventure. Tackling a group like this should be the work of a campaign, and one that should at points scare the bejeezus out of your players.

ruleslawyer is right. Due to the unimaginative author of the adventure, the Vampires were essentially wussies. In fact, going by the author's vampire slaying rules, what's to keep players from "staking" everything in sight? And only at a -4 penalty for using an exotic weapon. Mmmm...nope! I'm not seein' the logic behind that! :)

I liked the Dying of the Light. However, the optional staking rules not only made no sense but also made the adventure nearly impossible.

My group was able to kill off three of the vampires easily, but couldn't find the others in time. During the showdown, the party was completely massacred with only the Cleric getting out alive thanks only to Dimension Door.

It was a good and difficult adventure. A lot of the Heptad was killed but then replaced by some of the slain party members, which has made the Heptad a dangerous future opponent.
