Even though I'd throw this more into the Sociology camp, as someone with a Political Science degree, I could actually see some interesting studies coming out of this course.

Such things as "what is the most appealing aspect of MMORGs" and "what can we learn and apply to Terran politics" would be quite interesting. Also, there's the whole "Lord of the Flies" aspect which would be intriguing.

Of course, you'd have to filter out both the escapism aspect and the implicit and explicit social engineering implied in the setting.

That, or the professor is hopelessly addicted.

I personally don't like "pay to play" RPG's, I gave EQ a shot, twice. never liked it, not the place to say why. But If I had a shot to take this course, It might have changed my opintion of MMORPG's.

I wonder why the computer requirements are so inflexible? Everquest is also available for the Mac platform and PS2, albeit run on different servers.

I knew a Professor who ran a course in ' How to Make Beer'

He was a Chemist who had specialised in Zymotology (sp) which is apparently the study of fermentation so it ended up being quite academic whilst also involving lots of (relatively) free alcohol...

The real deal.

I know a guy that works for the "State Department" that is a gamer and took a 'games' class when he was in college, but I can't remember where it was at. He told me all about the class and such, as I also wished I had a cool course like that.

The students were asked to create games and they started out with simple ones (board games like Sorry) and progressed to complex ones that were supposed to last for more than one sitting (like D&D). He said most of the complex ones were modeled after d20 games that most of the students were already aware of, but some of the other results were rather unusual. The prof also had the old PHB and DMG on the list of reading in his syllabus for that part of the class.

Just wish I could recall where he graduated from...
