If you don't like the idea of multiclassing to get into a prestige class that requires multiclassing, then don't aim for that prestige class. Why not just give wizards proficiency with all martial weapons, then they wouldn't have to multiclass with fighter to get into eldritch knight?

I have to agree with DanMcS - making class abilities feats to avoid having to take the class is unbalancing and nerfs the class.

D&D and other class-based RPG games aren't intended to have the 'open-architecture' of a system like GURPS - it may not seem 'realistic' or 'fair', but it's the way the game is designed, and pulling that apart affects other parts of the game.
