Even the Gilmore Girls don't like D&D....

Ack! A challenge to my manhood! I must puff myself up and reply! ;)

Honestly, I do find the show to be pretty funny in places. I think Rorry (or however you spell her name) is hilarious and smart. But I absolutely can't stand Lorelei. I think she's nuts--absolutely mad and dangerously so. Perhaps it's because she reminds me too much of my ex-wife. Hmmm. That could be it.

But I do watch it every week with my girlfriend. It's kind of grown on me...like a yeast infection. :D

My girlfriend told me she'd rather have me getting together with friends to smoke pot and booze it up, than play D&D.

"What?" I asked incredulously. "You'd rather I went out and broke the law than play a game?" Not that I give much of a crap about what the law says...I just wanted to be clear on this.

She couldn't quite explain why, but that was about the size of it. It's a prejudice, plain and simple. Like phobia, it is irrational and unexplainable.

(Anybody know of a one-bedroom apartment for rent in D.C.?)

If you're being serious, I have to say.... that's one of the most wacked out things I've ever heard. How old is she, if you don't mind me asking?

I too am biased

I recently found out that a co-worker of my girlfriend playes D&D. She works in an investment banking firm (State Street Bank), and I didn't think I made any biases about the guy, but this past holiday season her group had a party at a local eatery. When I met the guy I was shocked as he was NOTHING like I had expected. About 6 feet tall, thick as a commercial refrigerator, and very very muscular. He greeted me with a hearty "Was sup dude!" in a distinct Boston accent. He shook my hand and I tried as hard as I could to match the strength of his squeeze without making wierd faces.

I never expected a linebacker to play D&D. I'm not saying I expected a geek, just not THAT stereotype.

It opened my eyes to my own biases.

The Simpsons..

I can't believe no one has mentioned the episode of the Simpsons where Homer goes back to college, and starts hanging out with the nerds. At dinner, they have the following conversation (paraphrased from my own poor memory)

Marge: So how as school today?
Homer: Great!! We played Dungeons and Dragons for 3 hours! And then I was slain by an elf..
Bart: Listen to yourself, man! You're hanging with nerds!
Homer: Why you little!!!
Marge: Now Homer, these boys sound nice but they're clearly nerds..

And then Lisa drowns on and on about the great contributions made by nerds such as Bill Gates and Orville Reddenbocker.

All apologies to the makers of this wonderful show for my poor misquotation.

Now now now

i LOVE GIlmore Girls (Shock anyone) and i like Laureli. I think shes graet, smart, witty and a little neurotic at times. Much like my mom.

Then again i see the Gilmore Girlsa s my mom and myself. My mom is fixing to be 38 in march. I turn 23 in October. You do the math

Yeah, she can be witty and everything, but she's still mad as a hatter.

In any case, my estimation of Lorelei was much reduced by her closed-minded attitude toward D&D.

Or should I blame the writers instead of the character?

Hmmmm....

there's a couple of episodes of the simpsons with dnd in it. theres that one and the one where bart gets to go to the gifted class and they are playing dnd in the class.
Also on strangers with candy they had a day where they were supposed to come to school dressed as their char's and jerry chickened out to hang with the "cool" kids or something.

Of course, we also have the example of "Futurama," which had our own Col_Pladoh as a guest star.

I missed that one, care to share some details?

Here's another one from the Siphyl & Ollie show. For those not in the know, this was a hilarious but short lived MTV late night show hosted by two sock puppets. One segment of the show was 'Calls from the Public' in which other sock puppets call in with their questions for Siphyl & Ollie.

So this geeky looking sock calls in and asks Siphyl & Ollie "do you guys ever play D&D?". They reply, "D&D, no that games for geeks, we'd never play that". Then the geeksock continues with his question anyway, describing some situation in which his magic user is stuck in some part of the dungeon, or something like that. Then Siphyl (or Ollie, I forget) say, "okay, here's what you gotta do..." and gives some big drawn out response involving how to work off his DM, save up gold pieces, buy some special magic item, etc., basically proving that despite their denials they're both hardcore D&D fans at heart.

My description probably didn't do it justice, but it was pretty funny if you saw it.

I didn't see this one, but I heard lots about it. There was that show with Christina Applegate, 'Jesse' ( I think that was the title). They did a number on us, let me tell you.

Apparently, some smart guy tries to pick up one of the characters (I'm guessing it was Christina), invites her to come over and hang out at a party with his friends. She's intrigued, decides to go. She gets there and the guys are playing Dungeons & Dragons. To make matters worse, they are each wearing some goofy hat. One has a viking helm, one has a pointy hat, etc. They talk her into playing, and she has to wear a funny hat. I'm told the episode was pretty funny.

At work, all of my games were forever after referred to as " wearing funny hats. "

"You gonna go wear funny hats this weekend, Ruiner?"
"Yeah..." slumping his shoulders in shame.
