Animated Objects

I would definately have animated coaches that run on simple commands (after paying the fee in GP of course) and take you where ever you want to go in the city. If not following commands then driving a predetermined route would do.

Sort of high magic public transportation.

You could have fun with this as GM misunderstanding the dwarves "scotty" accent and the other characters voice tones, paterns and and inflection.

Pehaps one is even slightly hard of hearing....I'd be fun to watch the PCs get frustrated with something the rest of the town takes for granted.

If you can get your hands on the Dragon Magazine archives, try looking up issue #73 (at least I think it's #73). It has all sorts of nice ideas for magic items meant to make the lives of the well to do easier. No real game effectiveness, but nice for general effect.

What about an earing (or a set of them) that give advice on the local customs? Or give guided tours? "On the left, you will see a local favorite, The Corner Inn, established 30 years ago next winter."
 

Rich people use summoned beasts/demons of various types to do chores and menial tasks - way out of the league of the poor though. Demons would make great messengers with their teleporting.

Who made the mood vest? Was it engine stoker Jones, by any chance?

Excellent ideas! Thank you all for such great suggestions!

My players won't be in this city too terribly long (maybe a week or so of game time) and they have some cash burning holes in their pockets, so I'm looking forward to presenting them with cool magical devices that don't imbalance game play, but can still be a lot of fun to have. Great status symbols that indicate they've been to mystical far-away places.

the ladies could have little magical folding fans that, when unfolded, levitate in the air and fan them daintally.

rain-repulsion amulets could keep people safe from small drops of water (useless against anything else)

Like everyone else, I see unseen servents being very common in every household.

The different spell levels could be taught in grade school. 1st level spells = first grade, etc... You are done with school when the spells taught are beyond your intelligence.

AND ON THE DARKER SIDE OF THIS SEEMING UTOPIA:

The grade you reach determines your place in society. 1sts are menial workers and 9ths are leaders.
Those people whose int is less than 9 are treated as inferior subjects at best and slaves at worse.

AND TO GET REALLY DARK

All this magic is powered by the slow bleeding off of the soul of a Soul Trapped Gold Dragon Great Wyrm, on display in a case in a building in the center of town. "He'll run out of magic in a few years, but we usually just cash Wish to summon a new one, kill it, and soul trap it. It's really quite convenient."
 


On the rain repulsion thing...

An amulet that brings into being a magical dome, like Tenser's Floating Disk, except it hovers above the user's head. It could be shappable, so that when not in a dome form, it could be used as a shelf.
 

My suggestion: figure out ways that magic lets you do things differently than even modern technology.

For example - if teleportation gates are easy to create, you could have the following effect:

The well-to-do live in homes that are built *up* rather than out. Each room is its own 'cell' that is stacked up with the others to make the best use of the space. There are no doors or connections between the rooms.

Travel between rooms is accomplished with door frames that act as gates. Place one frame in the wall in one room and another in a completely different room - viola! You now pass through the doorway and are teleported between the rooms, even if they are on different floors.

If you get tired of the 'arrangement' of your house, you simply have servants re-arrange the doors to your liking.

"When the Baron comes to visit, I want a new set of double doors in the Great Hall that lead to the Gallery, so that he can easily come to view my illusion sculptures."

This also lets you close off rooms that you don't want used. Just take down one of the doorways and put it away in the basement, with the others.

Additionally, doors can be pulled off the walls to provide privacy. Simply turn the door around, and the one-way teleportation effect goes to a solid wall. This might be a nice way to introduce the magical effect. PCs walk into a room, and the homeowner says 'let me make sure we aren't disturbed', takes the open doorway off the wall and turns it around.

Windows can be handled in a similar fashion. Even a closet buried deep in the ground can have a window that allows air and sunlight into the house - just set up a large, empty barn in the country, fill the walls with magical teleporting and televiewing windows, and stick the matching ones on your walls in the city. Ta da! Nice views, sunlight, and fresh air.

Of course, if a burglar gets her hands on one of your unused doors secretly, they have a nice way to silently enter your lavish fortress home.

Think of doing things differently with magic. Why have a create water spell that acts as a shower when you can enchant an archway with a "clean" spell and walk through it after arising in the morning?

Why make horseless carriages mimicking our cars when people can fly or teleport everywhere?

Why have lights on poles when you can simply enchant the cobbles of the street to cast light of their own? For that matter, why have streets, since anyone of importance can fly or teleport? Streets are for proles - they'll take dirt and like it.
