Really, to me it's no different than having Shadowfell in Nentir or Hommlet in Greyhawk. It's just a bunch of proper nouns that will be changed by DMs anyway.

A few of you act like it doesn't matter but I would say it is significant. New player's will get their introduction to the game and will get an introduction to the Forgotten Realms which could create lots more Realms fans.

I've never really done anything in the Realms beyond a few Salvatore books, and so am pretty unfamiliar with them. So while I have nothing against the setting, it does leave me feeling a little out of the loop when there are so many references to such a big world. This certainly is not a big deal, but I would have preferred a generic setting.

It has got to be based somewhere and FR makes sense. The Realms has a huge following outside the TT RPG and it would a bit silly for WotC to not leverage that (novels, MMOs).

4E's attempt to not have a core setting didn't quite work in that the non setting sort of became a setting.

So, IMO, it has to be set somewhere and that somewhere has to be vanilla enough to fit 5B (5th Edition Basic), so really you have FR, GH and Mystara for that. FR wins hands down for recognition.

And you're wrong. It's okay, your opinion matters to someone, but you are wrong.

New players will get an introduction to whatever setting the DM wants to use as their base setting.

I'll probably run Fallout and my cliched as hell "Hunt the Widgetty-Maguffin" plot if I run 5e. Which is the only way my group will experience 5e as they are even less inclined to run things as I am.

Most new DM's and player's will use what's there. I wouldn't see many new player's and DM's using a world outside of the one that comes with the boxset because it would take them out of their comfort zone. When they become experienced yes, but not a newbie. Also, new player's and DM's may want to explore the Realms further, so they will delve in game and out of game.
