A few of you act like it doesn't matter but I would say it is significant. New player's will get their introduction to the game and will get an introduction to the Forgotten Realms which could create lots more Realms fans.

Unless there's some kind of fire marshal imposed limit on realms fans, how does that matter?

It's hard to say without knowing much of the sort of setting that the 5e Forgotten Realms will be. I'm mostly interested in if the actual adventures focus on meaningful PC choices and their ramifications. If I end up purchasing any 5e material it will be to use as fodder and inspiration for 4e and 13th Age once I have enough time in my schedule for another game.

I voted "No" because I'm grumpy and think the Realms is terrible.

It had a chance to get interesting with the 4e shake-up, and it actually did with the Neverwinter setting book, but now they've back-pedaled all of that and it's just a bland, boring mishmash again.

Just grouchy. I'm aware it's the most popular setting in D&D history, possibly but not definitely excepting Dragonlance. So it makes sense. But still, gar.

(Full disclosure: Still like the old grey box though, from before the damn thing got bloated!)

e: And also, get off my lawn.

Probably hates the Realms and is caused pain deep in his hearty heart by every new fan that was, is, or shall be.

*raises hand*
Really? You never played any RPGs at all before you began DMing?

Well you are the second person I've ever known of you started DMing without ever having played. By the of chance, did you start in '74 too?

I'm happy that the OP adventures are all set in the same world, and I'm also happy that the Starter Set adventure is set in that same world.

Personally, I think it would have been cool to have that world be a new Points of Light-style thing, but from WotC's perspective, FR is the best option for a lot of reasons.

Nowhere in that guys post was he complaining about the new fans. I thought he was actually glad about it, and thus his use of the word significant.

Yep. And no, I started in 1981 with Moldvay Basic. And believe me, it was tough figuring out how to play from just the rulebook. Luckily that rulebook included both an example of exploration play and an example of combat, things which I think are important to include in an introductory product as a result.

On topic: I do agree that the Grey Box version of the Realms remains the best version of the Realms (though my intro to the Realms was the Gold Box games and then the 3E FRCS; I only picked up the Grey Box later). It is the era in which I prefer to play.

In my opinion the "best" version of the Realms is whatever someone else likes and I never have to play in.

I hate the Realms. I'm a Mystara fan (no Hollow Earth or Moon nonsense though) and have been since I picked up my first setting guide The Grand Duchy of Karameikos oh so long ago.
