Everyone is epic.

Has anyone thought of running a campaign where everyone starts at level 20?

Not just the characters, but everyone. All the commoners, aristocrats, etc.

Children could be "only" level 7 or so.

This way everyone gets to design a character with all the cool features they want. Maybe only ten levels in any one class.

Just a thought I thought I would share.

But Epic is a relative term. Everyone being epic just means that no one is epic.

BTW, isn't this some kind of campaign idea in the ELH itself? The "epic" city or somesuch?

(I don't know, I just put in my buy.com order yesterday. Finally decided I could't pass up getting a $40 book for less than $14 brand new, even if I was only sorta interested in it...)

Do the monsters get to be epic as well?

I say an epic commoner could kick the butt of an epic cat. Does anybody say otherwise?

Probably not if the cat has Devastating Critical as one of its' feats!

As a joke, I'm writing up the Epic Level NPC Handbook. It's actually a few pages now... I hope to expand it to include new epic feats, skill uses, and PrCs for NPC classes.

Who will be first to build the 30th level halfling commoner and the 30th level house cat? :)

Excerpt from my work, "Epic NPC Classes":

Commoners are the foundation on which society rests. Farming, manual labor, and other professions are needed to support any significant population. The epic commoner does everything their lower-level counterparts do, only better.
Your epic feats should support your various professions. Epic Skill Focus is an obvious choice with class skills like Profession, Craft, Handle Animal, and Use Rope. Perfect Health ensures that you never miss a day of your work.
Improve your Wisdom, which is the key ability for Profession, and your Intelligence, which is the key ability for Craft and gives you more skill points.
Other Options: Extended Life Span can prolong your youth.
Hit Die: d4.
Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 2 + Int modifier.
Bonus Feats: As an NPC class, commoners lack the raw power of other classes. They gain no bonus feats.

This is the 2nd thread in a month that has talked about high level commoners and other NPC classes. And although the rules don't explicitly forbid it I really don't think that was the intention of NPC classes. These classes were a way to put into game terms the "ordinary" people that the PC's will meet and interact with during a game.If an "ordinary person gains to many level then he is no longer "ordinary" is he.

Take the warrior for example this class is meant to represent army soldier or city gaurds.A first level warrior would be a private,2nd level a corporeal, and third level a sergeant. But lets face it if this person continues to advance in his career he really a fighter and needs to start taking fighter levels or even convert his warrior levels to fighter. The same goes for adept at some point the person is no longer just tinkering with the supernatural and needs to start taking a PC class such as wizard or Cleric.

The only exception to this is the expert.A master craftsman would be a high level expert though his fighting abilities should be based on his exact profession a weapon smith probably would know how to use the weapons that he forges but a gemcutter would not nessesarily have any martial skills.

As for the commoner and the Aristocrat any one extrodinary enough to make it to 4th level or beyond is also good enough to get levels in a PC class.Don't tell me about the gritty seasoned farmer who's made epic level but doesn't have a single level in fighter.I would ask where did be get all of his experience. If he truly had life experiences enough to get him to epic level then he's not going to be a commoner anymore is he.He will have changed with the circumstances and yes Farming may be his true love and the only thing he wants to be.But an Epic level farmer is really a fill-in the-blank who happens to farm.Ranger, fighter and Druid come to mind as possibilies.
