The party are very much aware of my characters moral dilemma as they like to call it. They enjoy the mystery of what I'm doing when they aren't around and exactly how far the character will go. Of course, I consult the DM every step of the way and get his input on the character. Experiencing the cold, grey truth of death made her determined to never go back at any cost and she just happens to be an Phiarlan Elf. My DM and I have discussed all options including her turning on the party, becoming a lich and even a vampire.
I was wondering if anyone else had ever had to play out something like this? Our group had a similar situation a few years ago when our Archer shot a hostage through the face to get at her kidnapper. If that wasn't bad enough, he did it in front of his Best Friend (our resident Paladin). Our party knew nothing of the coming storyline and the DM loved it. The shock in the group is a talking point to this day.
