Of course I use old PCs.
In fact, my current campaign is built upon the exploits of the PCs in the last one. Two of them started whole new religions, one of them created a secret society, several now have towns, villages, and cities named after them, and more than one has an enormous monument dedicated to him or her. Additionally, they were integral in creating the kingdom that now rules the land...
However, all of those PCs are now dead, or moved on, or whatever.
In the framework of the current campaign, I've actually had one player retire 2 PCs because he was tired of them. In both cases, when he was done with them, they became mine. One was a "CG" rogue, who eventually capitulated and became CE (which is essentially how he'd been played the whole time, anyway), and the other a "LG" fighter, who was played (unfortunately) much closer to LE.
One of them returned as a villain, while the other was brought into line with the alignment on his sheet after I gained control of him.
In yet another case, due to a couple of misbegotten Wishes and some time travel, one PC essentially sold his soul to a powerful Lich in the campaign, thus creating what is effectively an evil version of a PC that's still around. They have yet to meet the evil version, but when they do, it will be a par-tay!
