Exalted Monk

First Post
So my friend is running a campaign in which we must unite several planes to stop an invasion from the Far Realm (The DM stubbornly calls it the Void, but I'm always right anyway :b ).

Now, I choose to run a Monk and loaded up on Exalted feats, including non-violence and poverty. All-in-all this makes for a very interesting character, as well as intra-party relationships. (Yes, I have already hinted that the party's female cleric should apply oils to me, since I am not allowed to use them on myself).

However, my party consists of a Lawful Evil kobold sorceror, and Chaotic Neutral elven ranger (the dwarf fighter, and human cleric are okay in my books).

Kobold Sorceror:
A little vicious, he is using the coward archetype, so he doesn't do overtly evil acts, but tends to coup-de-grace any enemy I have to put down with subdual damage. I'm taking some time out of our travels each day to give him a lesson on mercy, sacrifice and goodness in general. Kobold's player says it's okay if I convert him. The player is very mature and enjoys the weird master/apprentice relationship we have.

Elven Ranger:
The player is immature (so, my gripe is mainly with the player >_>). Basically, he is too combat-oriented, in a campaign with heavy roleplaying elements. Also, his 'in character' roleplaying is detrimental to the whole process. I think the most in character words to come out of his mouth were:
"Allright kobold, one more word and I'll skewer you" (He was Chaotic Good when he said this)
"I get drunk"
"Let me out of the sphere of force, or at least give me some beer"

Human Cleric:
She wants me, I know it.

My two main questions are:
1) How should I go about converting the kobold
2) How should I try to convert the ranger (in game, I'll deal with the player issues seperatly).

Pardon my ignorance, but convert them to what?

For the elf, conversion at the point of a sword won't work since your PC doesn't use one. How about using the Kiss of the Dragon technique Jet Li used in the movie of the same name?

Now there is the little known spell Kobolds to Kolaches...

:p

I think I figured it out... you're trying to change the characters' alignments to Good?

If so, consider the alignment descriptions.

From the SRD 3.5 on WOTC Website:
“Good” implies altruism, respect for life, and a concern for the dignity of sentient beings.
“Evil” implies hurting, oppressing, and killing others.

“Law” implies honor, trustworthiness, obedience to authority, and reliability. On the downside, lawfulness can include close-mindedness, reactionary adherence to tradition, judgmentalness, and a lack of adaptability. Those who consciously promote lawfulness say that only lawful behavior creates a society in which people can depend on each other and make the right decisions in full confidence that others will act as they should.

Now, consider your kobold pal:
Lawful Evil, “Dominator”: A lawful evil villain methodically takes what he wants within the limits of his code of conduct without regard for whom it hurts. He cares about tradition, loyalty, and order but not about freedom, dignity, or life. He plays by the rules but without mercy or compassion. He is comfortable in a hierarchy and would like to rule, but is willing to serve. He condemns others not according to their actions but according to race, religion, homeland, or social rank. He is loath to break laws or promises.

... and the kind of people he comes from. Kobolds are basically a savage race of cowards who are constantly bullied into servitude by larger or stronger races. They have to stick together in large groups to survive, and rely on trickery and traps to defend themselves. They hate gnomes (for whatever reason).

IMO, to successfully convert your kobold to a Good alignment, he must first be shown that hurting people isn't always necessary to get what he wants. He will have to fight hard to overcome people's prejudices against him, as he must struggle against prejudices of his own. He is lawful; he is capable of honor and trust, and if proven to have a continuous record of honor and trust, people won't be so loathe to stone him on sight or force him into slavery. Public exposure to good deeds will win the hearts of the people, and the kobold will no longer need to be so defensive. This will at least shift him to Neutral, when he will then focuses his desire into following the laws of the people in the adventuring area. Once he is proven to be law-abiding and people recognize him as a contributing member of society, he may then realize that doing good deeds is far more rewarding than skulking in shadows and stealing, and he will want to become and do Good so that he will earn even more respect. And perhaps, in time, he may even attract people who are curious about this kobold's way of life (in the form of cohorts/followers) or inspire other kobolds/goblins/other 'dominated' races to break free of their opressors and follow their own pursuits.
