Excerpt: City of Brass

Not digging the idea of Spelljammers being planar travelling ships now.

I want Spelljammer to stay in SPACE!

Oh well, I use my own cosmology anyways!

Well, I don't find the map impressive at all. The art is nice, but it looks undetailed. I want a map I can use, not just look at.
Agreed. I think the map is fairly useless. For some reason city maps seem to be a weak point in WotC publications. E.g. the Sharn sourcebook for Eberron had terrible maps. They really should have used something like 'geomorphs' instead of a fixed map.

So far the excerpts for MotP did nothing for me. I still have no clue if it's something I might enjoy.

Nah, Sigil is still around according to the article. Perhaps just less of a trade hub?

Gaming history wise, The City of Brass has been THE trade city of the multi planes since TSR started caring about such fluff. Sigil just puts out false claims in an effort to take their place.

I was about to say.

Colors, textures... nice.

Layout... compared to the minarets and a ziggarut piercing three layers of the city in NG CoB, this map seems plain. Take out the sea of fire, it looks like it could be any old city in FR.

There you go! The WOTC City of Brass has no where near the character and coolness of Necromancers City of Brass. Even just on the mapping level.

I agree, take out the Sea of Fire and that city could be anywhere.

Well, of course it doesn't. :)

When you compare a 1250 word preview and a single image against a $70 boxed set with multiple books and over 450 pages you will get a seriously lopsided comparison.

Even though NecG's SoB was awesome, I don't think the 4e Manual of the Planes entry for the City of Brass was ever intended to be compared with a full-on boxed set from a known publisher with relatively close relations with WOTC.

You apparently have the boxed set. Pull out the overview map of the CoB and compare it to WOTC's, then you will hopefully "get" what I am saying.

Oh, I get what you are saying.

But I am also saying that a comparison is inappropriate and unnecessary since it's obvious that a huge boxed set will have way more cool than a mini-excerpt from a book where it's just a small part of an overall planar treatment.

I think it's meant more to point out the inherent creativity than the level of detail. Looking at both from a birds eye view, one is conceptually much more interesting than the other.

Right, and I agree that NecG's CoB is way cool. But I am responding to the statement:

The WOTC City of Brass has no where near the character and coolness of Necromancers City of Brass.
I still stand by my statement that it's an inappropriate comparison (though I knew the minute that the excerpt was announced that someone would attempt a comparison). I would EXPECT a 450 page boxed set to be way cooler, wouldn't you?
