Ranger seems like a popular choice, but I’m not really sure why? d8 hit die and light or medium armor means less survivability than a Paladin or especially a Barbarian, and it’s damage output is just kinda on par with that of other martial classes. I suppose a Beastmaster brings an extra sack of hit points with him? I don’t just don’t see it.

Ranger was my fifth choice really.

Rangers have d10 hit die, if you go DEX you can have decent armor in medium armor, grab a longbow and the Archery fighting style and you can have either Collossus Slayer or Horde Breaker as a Hunter for decent at-will ranged damage.

Fighter and Rogue are you go to here. Rogue has no short/long rest abilities, and while the Fighter has a few, they don't need them like other classes seem to. Ranger is probably the next best, but Ranger isn't that strong to begin with. Barbarian, Paladin, and Monk just aren't very good without Rage, Smite, and Ki. Normal spellcasters are out, because cantrips just aren't gonna cut it. Warlock is the only one really viable, and even then based on build.
