As will be more fully explained in the forthcoming Urban Arcana book, creatures that come directly from Shadow do get bonus languages based on Intelligence. (We're talking about new arrivals; creatures that recently crossed over. Creatures that have lived in our world for years, or that are descended from Shadow creatures, do not.)

It's possible that some of the creatures/characters in the d20 Modern Roleplaying Game have bonus languages when they should not. If that's the case (I haven't had time to check them all out), it's an error.

Background:
Danny Woods is usually just a step or two on the wrong side of the law. He's been in and out of reform school and jail since he was 13. He just got out of jail for his first stint as an adult and was lucky enough to land a job here at the rest stop diner, thanks to the jailer letting him help prepare meals for the other inmates of the county lockup. He has an instinctive distrust of authority. He's thin and wiry, with long, greasy hair tied back in a ponytail. He's wearing a Metallica concert t-shirt with the arms ripped out, blue jeans and scuffed combat boots. Under the t-shirt is a longjohn shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a pack of Marlboro reds tucked into the folds.

You get one set of clothes for free, and I'll count the combat boots as part of that, so you can drop casual clothes from the list. OTOH, I figure that the motorcycle helmet is likely to have a purchase DC higher than 6, so that'll cost you a Wealth point. Overall, a Wealth score of 1 seems right.

Since the incident at Exit 23, Danny reluctantly took Mr. Riley up on his offer, journeying with him back to the Hoffman Institute. After several days of interrogation and testing, it was determined that he was a low-grade Psi with the sporadic ability to move faster than normal at times, with the potential for even more. The Institute offered Danny the opportunity to train his abilities. With nothing else to look forward to besides flipping burgers, Danny accepted and began the long, slow process of training his abilities.

Background:
Even as a child, Lisa was incredibly inquisitive. The dreaded "Why?" phase lasted from the minute she learned the word until well into 4th grade. Undaunted by the prospects of mud or frogs, no stone near the little duck pond was left unturned, nor did any corner of her attic (or those of her friends, or her cousins, or her friends' cousins, etc) remain unexplored. Unsurprisingly, she studied journalism, moving from Columbia, MO to take classes at Columbia U, NY. After her graduation, she became an investigative journalist, specializing in the stories that took too much footwork for others. All that changed May 8, 2003.

Lisa had been working on a story on militias in Montana; this particular one had unusually cultish leanings, which she thought might help sell the story. Trying to infiltrate, though, she was found out. She says she doesn't remember what happened in the next two months; judging from what the police officers said she was babbling about when they found her, and from what the psychiatrists said later, that's probably for the best. Whatever it was, the Institute took an interest in her case, offering the finest private therapists if she went to work for them, continuing her investigative work. Amazingly, she accepted. She seems to have made a full recovery, though occasional flashes of a very different person have begun leaking out on occasion.

Appearance: Lisa stands about 5'10", but she's rather on the slender side. Her roundish face is framed by brown curls down to her shoulders, and her blue eyes sparkle with curiosity. She usually dresses in low-cut jeans and light jackets.

Desc:

When Caleb first enters a room, the first thing that many people notice is the prematurely gray hair framing a still young face. He still has the all American build that he did in high school and college, although he no longer lifts with the same intensity of his youth.

When his knee was shattered from a chop block while in college, it was his future wife who showed him there was more to life than glory on the gridiron. She allowed him to channel the passion he felt for the game into his studies, and his crowning moment when his scholarship read academic vice athletic.

History:

Sheriff Caleb Finn's world shattered the night he lost his wife and daughter to a a crazed killer that had escaped from an upstate psycho ward. The killer was obsessed with the vampire legends, going as far as to wear a fake set when he located his victims.

Destroyed emotionally, the small town sheriff resigned, and had every intention of killing himself in the small hunting cabin he had. He was surprised to see an unmarked sedan already there. Entering warily, he saw three men in business suits sitting around his table, but as one, they stood when he entered.

What happened next, Caleb thought only happened in movies, as they explained to him that the killer was not a "pretend" vampire, but a real one. Shocked and stunned with disbelief, Caleb stared blankly at the floor for what seemed an eternity. Finally looking back up at them, Caleb asked why they had told him this, if it was supposed to be a secret.

Reaching inside his coat pocket, one of the men pulled out a simple business card with "Hoffman Institute" emblazened on the front and an address on the back.

"If you want to know more, they have your answers."

Three years later, Caleb is still looking for leads on the monster who shattered his life, but he knows that sooner or later a break will come his way. Then, with or without Hoffman's backing, the former hunter will become the prey.
