He did so well he was scouted by a trainer for a local dojo, where he has trained daily for long hours since leaving school. Background: Johnathan is the son of two lawyers living in Cambridge, a smaller city near Boston. He grew up with both his parents and his two sisters (one older, one younger) in a pleaseant, unremarkable upper-middle-class life. He went to a private high school, where he shone in all subjects, but particularly in the humanities, and showed a ridiculous faculty for languages, seeming to master a new one every year or two. When he went on to College, he had his pick, but he chose to try something different and went all the way over the other coast, attending Reed college in Oregon. He graduated with degrees in Philosophy and Anthropology, and now he’s working on his PhD. Johnathan’s specialty is myth- his dissertation is a towering edifice looking at all sorts of myths from many different cultures (many of which Johnathan can read in their original languages), and comparing them to images in modern society.

Johnathan has really absorbed himself in to his work, and as a result has lost touch with his parents, sisters, and friends. Fortunately, Johnathan is fairly oblivious and forgetful at the best of times, and he hasn’t noticed his isolation until relatively recently. As a grad student, Johnathan works for one of his professors, who was due to make a presentation to some collegues in [Idaho/Montana]. Unfortunately, he fell and broke his leg a few days before. Since the Professor is a fairly likable individual, and Johnathan is a nice guy, he offered to head down there and make the presentation for him. The plane tickets the professor would’ve used had gotten lost, however, requiring Johnathan to hastily pack, rent a car (he’ll charge it to the university), and go on a several-day road trip through middle America. It was driving through the empty landscape that gave Johnathan time-too much time, really- to contemplate his life, and he’s realized his situation is poor. He’s now heading back from the presentation (in which, by-the-by, he thinks he fared relatively well), and has resolved to contact his family and his friends, and see what they’re up to. It’s been too long.

Another thing he's realized, now that he thinks about it, is that he's pretty wealthy.[Windfall feat] He's at a loss on how this state of affairs came in to being, since he doesn't pay attention to his finances very much- bills get payed, food gets bought, and otherwise he doesn't have any material concerns. Eventually he was forced to mentally shrug and decide the large amount of money is just a side effect of not spending it. [This is intentionally left open for you to play with or leave as you will, Jarval.]

Johnathan’s personality is the absent-minded Professor in his younger years. He’s got a genius-level intellect, and it shows sometimes- he uses big words, and sometimes over-uses them, turning a simple description in to a Babel-like tower of verbiage. He’s also forgetful, sometimes easily distracted, tends to lose things (like his keys), and forget important dates (like the birthdays of his immediate family). He’s fairly likable, however- he’s a nice fellow who tries to see the best in everybody.

Appearance: Johnathan is tall and very, very thin. His frame posses almost no muscle or fat, a result of a fast metabolism and no exercise whatsoever. His brown hair is long, down to his shoulders, and kept back in a ponytail. Other than that, he tends not to pay much attention to his appearance. Johnathan is short sighted, and so his usual appearance of a t-shirt and pants of some nature (usually jeans) is complimented (except when he misplaces them) by a pair of black wire-frame glasses.

He has led a boring middle-class life and always did what he thought he was supposed to. When not at the operating table, BJ enjoys golfing. He also likes really stupid jokes.
BJ lost his father to a drive-by shooting when he was 16 (BJ, not his dad). Having been standing right next to his father at the time, he was a little bit scarred. He hates guns and believes that they should be kept out of civilian hands. Gunshot wounds and trauma are his specialties.
BJ is currently traveling to see his mother.

Appearance:
BJ is a little short and a little out of shape. He has short gelled brown hair with a small bald patch above his right ear. Typical clothing for BJ includes a leather jacket on top of jeans, expensive Italian shoes, and a Ralph Lauren polo shirt.

Description:

Ben is a member of the Blackfoot tribe. He has the typical dark skin of Native Americans and blue-black hair that he wears shoulder length, sometimes tied back in a short pony tail. His high cheekbones and piercing eyes reveal his pure bloodline. He is thin but strong and has a typical runner's body.

Background:

Ben grew up on a reservation like so many Native Americans. His father and mother both worked in a local canned goods factory. Long hours and low wages made for a frugal home life. Ben was very close to his great Uncle, who was a Shaman. Ben lives in the modern world but is in touch with the spirits of his ancestors as well.

His father died young from a hard life and too much Whiskey. His mother stil lives on the reservation. Ben escaped this life by attending the local State University on a minority scholarship, and through the opening of a tribe-run Casino (Windfall Feat). After graduating with a degree in Environmental Sciences, Ben took a job as a Federal Park Ranger.

Ben now makes his living wandering the wilderness, rescuing lost hikers, spotting the potential dangers of forest fires and putting down the occasional rogue bear or mountain lion. He has stopped by the rest area at Exit 23 to use the restroom and make sure the facilities are in good repair.

**I looked up Exit 23 on Rte. 90 and it is in Montana. If we decide it is in Idaho, then Ben will be from the Nez Perce tribe and his language will change accordingly.

Nicholas Fletcher (Sixchan): Hit Points should be 10, not 8.

John Parkinson (Thomas Hobbes): You seem to have overspent by 4 skill points. You need to add your character's background.

Barry-John Dick (tmart): No rules issues. All looks good to me.

Daunte Spinks (loxmyth): Wealth should be 7, not 6. Also, you need to purchase you equipment. and copy across the background info from the OOC thread.

Benjamin Two Crow (ErichDragon): I'm guessing you've requisitioned most of your gear. That's fine (and how thing work for real), but it'd help if you could mark requisitioned equipment in some way, so I can tell what you do and don't own. At the moment, I'd guess that the only thing you've bought is a licence for your weapons.

Backround in just a tick, but the skill-point thing was actually something I wanted to ask you about. Is d20 Modern like D&D, in that you get 1 language per point of intelligence at character creation? I can't find anything one way or the other about it in the rulebook, but the "ordinaries" seem to follow this rule- they all know english +1 language per point of intelligence bonus.

If this is true, then

(9+4)x4=52 skill points

9 skills maxed out (9x4)=36

16 skill points remaining

4 languages read/write, 4 skill points, 12 remaining,

4 languages speak/read/write 8 points, 4 remaning.

So if that's true, I apparently have 4 less skill points that I'm supposed to.

But if it's not true, you're right, and I'm over by 4. I'll drop Spanish and Italian. And now I'll post my backround...

edit: One more question- are we using alleigances? I know what John's will be if we're using them, but I'm not sure if we are, so...

That's a good question. I'd assumed that D20 Modern worked the same as Star Wars, where you pay skill points for each language, but now I'm really not sure. I'll post a query over on the WotC D20 Modern board in the morning, and get back to you on this.

I'm happy using allegiances, although IMO a lot of people don't have any beyond "Family and Friends". As I see it, an allegiance represents a pretty deep commitment to its subject.

From Core Rulebook:

  • You automatically know how to speak your native language; you do not need ranks to do so.
  • Each additional language costs 1 rank. When you add a rank to Speak Language, you choose a new language that you can speak.
    *snip*
  • To be able to read and write a language that you can speak, you must take the Read/Write Language skill for the appropriate language.

Same goes for Read/Write.
