Expanded Psionics Handbook release date?

XP is the accepted abbrev for Experience Point.

Come to think of it, X is accepted as the initial of all words beginning by "ex", and even some other words (like "sex").

You wouldn't have this problem if you spelled it "ix" rather than "ex", though.

Finally, it's not an acronym if you don't pronounce it. For example, laser (Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation), radar (RAdio Detecting And Ranging), Nato (North-Atlantic Treaty Organisation), Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization), etc.

XPH is not pronounceable by a human throat, so it's not an acronym. EPH could be an acronym, though -- it can be pronounced " ef' ".

I was wondering about that, didn't seem right, but...

What is the proper term?

Abbreviation is a generic term that is proper for acronyms, shortened terms, and sets of initials.

But for sets of initials that aren't acronyms, there's no specific English word that I know of. My dictionary just give me "set of initials".

If you want, you can adopt the French word "sigle" (etym. probably sigillum, meaning seal), though. It's used for any set of initials, including acronyms (but excluding acronyms that aren't strictly sets of initials, like radar).

Expanded starts with an 'E,' that's the problem. Or mine depending on how you look at it.

Unreal Expanded Multiplayer is abbreviated as Unreal XMP. "EX" sounds the same as "X". X is just a cooler letter than E. Look at the mass media. Everyone likes to say Xtreme Sports rather than Extreme Sports.

The fact that the mass media has latched on to it as a fad is all the more reason not to use it, in my opinion. I'm with Welverin, it's the EPH.

At any rate, semantics aside, before this thread, I haven't seen anything more specific than April. I am looking forward to the book though.

Exactly, though I feel I have to channel Crow now and say EXTREME!

Sure it is. The X would be pronounced like the X in xaos (variant of chaos). That results in something like 'kf', which could either be simplified to 'cough' or, if you voice the 'x' (like the 'ch' in chutzpah), just clear your throat.
