Expedition to Undermountain Opinions?

Is it comprehensive, as in utilizing all the 2e material? Or is it more of a "sampling?" How does it mesh with the old boxed sets and supplements?

 Again?! Rats.
:D That's the first thing I thought upon reading this thread. Undermountain strikes again!

(Not that I'm surprised, of course. Undermountain is far too big to detail in one measly hardcover in the 'delve' format. Undermountain has always been one of those "too big for its britches" products, and always will be.) Still makes me laugh, though.

Given the size and format of EtU? That's not even possible.

I like the preview and already see ways to turn it into portions of the Dungeon beneath Ptolus.

The fact that there's adventurer graffiti much like the Delver graffiti in my Vock Row game doesn't hurt. (Now I want to know what was up with that music only one person could hear.)

Strange it's already available in Austria.

Finland too. A separate release date for Europe? That's a novelty.

It's a completely different concept than I am used to. It's seems to be not a complete Adventure but a Campaign Setting Overview with some ready to use Adventures for it. I cannot say if this is a good or bad thing, but it's definitively unexpected for me.

I think they should have made that part clear and there would be no disappointment if you needed a compete (big) adventure and the fluff text size is simply awefull.

I take it it's more "Mysteries of the Moonsea" than "Expedition to Castle Ravenloft"? *shudders*

I'll have to take a look at it, but my expectations just plummeted.

I get that this isn't what FR fans may have wanted, but the more I read about this, the more this sounds perfect for a non-FR big-dungeon-beneath-a-city sourcebook/adventure.

Based on these initial comments from people who have the book I've just cancelled my pre-order. Shame, I was looking forward to it until I read them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the original Undermountain just a bunch of maps with no monsters? I seem to recall it being in some way critically deficient when it comes to adventures.

WotC seems to be spending a lot of time trying to reinvent the wheel with adventures.

No.

There was a 128 campaign book with lots of encounter areas, as well as random encounter tables for each levels and new monsters as well.

The fact that the map has several unkeyed rooms on the maps beyond what's in the campaign book is what has some folks' knickers in a twist.

I'll look at it, but if the encounters are all independent of the rooms, I'm not sure if I'll be interested. If I pay this much money, I don't want to have to do a lot of work. The description sounds like a bunch of encounters that you can plug in (which may be worth some money) and a separate map that you can use if you want to. I already own that map, probably in a lot more detail than is available in this book.
