Consider this more of a call for clarification. Viper Strike allows for an AoO if the foe hit with it shifts.

And this AoO is with a party ally. So, can a person with a ranged attack handy qualify? Or only someone adjacent in the classical sense?

The warlord can provide an Opportunity Attack to any ally. However, Oppportunity Attacks can only be performed on targets the attacker threatens, and characters only threaten adjacent squares. So if the warlord gives the Opportunity Attack to an archer, the archer probably won't be able to use it.

That leads to an interesting question; would an ally adjacent to the square the creature is shifting into qualify, or does the AoO need to be completed before the shift is resolved?

It's the shift that provokes the OA, so the OA interrupts the shift--in other words, you have to take the OA before the shift, just like any other movement-provoked OA.
