The prolonged infancy of human offspring changes everything.
You're exactly right. We are one of the very few species whose offspring are born long before they're remotely capable of independence. I'm looking more at the biological goings-on. Specifically, how the issue of refractory period plays into this whole mess. There are some theories floating around that state the reason men stereotypically "fall asleep" after a sexual encounter is b/c hormones/chemicals are released into the bloodstream that act as sedatives. Women, on the other hand, do not suffer this outcome; they remain wide awake. One theory suggests that it is during that refractory period that the female would leave the male and seek another male with whom she could mate, furthering her chances for successful insemination. The male wakes up, finds the female gone, and his base biological drive to pass his genetic material kicks in, so he leaves the scene and finds another female. Mind you, this is only a theory . And wow is this off-topic...

There is a case to be made for either side of the argument. I find it an intriguing discussion...it's a shame we're having it on a forum reserved for role-playing issues.
