Fallout: New Vegas Preorder Promotions....

Frickin' frackin' promotional gimmick. I really hate when folks do stuff like this. :(

Several major retailers are getting Pre-order Packs as extra content for FO:NV, with each getting different promotions.

In order of my preference:
Steam and Walmart -- The Caravan Pack:

* Lightweight Leather Armor - This hand-modified suit of leather armor reduces its overall weight without impacting its ability to protect.
* Sturdy Caravan Shotgun - Despite its rough appearance, this Caravan Shotgun will reliably fire 20 gauge shells until the Brahmin come home.
* 4 Repair Kits - Useful for repairing any outfit or weapon, Repair Kits are a valuable tool for any caravaner.
* Binoculars – The Mojave Wasteland is a dangerous place, but with these trusty Binoculars you’ll be able to spot trouble coming.

I spend a lot more time as a wandering merchant than most other options - so this would be my first choice. Also, this set seems to have the largest number of durable goods, as opposed to expendables. Looks like Wally World gets my gaming dollars. :(

Best Buy -- The Mercenary Pack:

* Lightweight Metal Armor - Modified for long-range travel, this Metal Armor sacrifices some protection for mobility and overall weight.
* Mercenary’s Grenade Rifle - Though similar to other 40mm Grenade Rifles in the Mojave Wasteland, this model has a faster reload cycle.
* 3 Super Stimpaks - When you absolutely, positively, need to keep your blood inside your body, Super Stimpaks fix you up in no time.
* 3 Doctors Bags - Mercenaries and broken limbs go together like Iguana-on-a-Stick and Nuka Cola. Thankfully, these Doctors Bags take a bit of sting out of the inevitable crushed skull.

I like the sound of the grenade rifle and the armor. The rest... not so much.

GameStop -- The Classic Pack:

* Armored Vault 13 Suit - Extensively patched up and dotted with piecemeal armor, this outfit is a homage to the classic ending of the original Fallout.
* Vault 13 Canteen - This handy device is useful for staving off dehydration and providing a small amount of healing in the Mojave Wasteland.
* Weathered 10mm Pistol - A well-worn 10mm pistol that packs an extra punch despite its modest size.
* 5 Stimpaks - Food and water are good for long-term healing, but when the fighting is fierce, Stimpaks help keep Wastelanders upright.

The canteen and the armored suit sound, well, okay, I guess. :-S 10mm pistols don't impress me much though.

Amazon -- The Tribal Pack:

* Tribal Raiding Armor - Pieced together from scraps of armor, this outfit provides protection without impacting mobility.
* Broad Machete - This heavy-bladed melee weapon does high damage against limbs and can quickly deal out a flurry of attacks.
* 5 Bleak Venom doses - Useful on any Melee Weapon, Bleak Venom makes short of work of most living targets.
* 10 Throwing Spears - If you would like to silently pin an enemy's head to a wall, Throwing Spears are the way to do it.

I dress like a Raider and I'm loud.
I'm of the aboriginal crowd!
When you see the wastes these days,
It seems there's a promotional craze!
I'm a tribal, he's a tribal, she's a tribal, wouldn't you like to be a tribal too?
Ooh, I'm a tribal, ain't got no rival, ooh be a tribal, new arrival....
That little ditty sounds like it will be more entertaining than the content of the pack, but I have no idea why it wandered into my brain like that.

Pack contents were lifted from G4TV - Read more at G4TV.

Thoughts?

Frickin' frackin' promotional gimmick. I really hate when folks do stuff like this. :(

I'm somewhat of a collector and completionist, so this used to bother me too. When Star Trek Online came out, just about every major retailer had a different promo item! First, I had to remind myself that these promo items really don't have much of an impact on my enjoyment of a game. Later, STO made most (if not all) of these promo items available through their micro-transaction store. The practice seems to be becoming commonplace, and while I still find the practice annoying, it's just not that big of a deal.

I think I have wrecked my beautiful and reliable five year old PC playing Fallout 3 and Supreme Commander. Having to reboot during the crashes (and perhaps too much heat), now makes it a very unhappy camper. Takes forever to load now and tries to do a chk dsk on every boot (but always freezes during it).

Add to that that I am going back for my fourth year of university while my PC lives at Home, and I am afraid it will be years before I get to play Fallout: New Vegas. Or I will be dumb and possible wreck Old Reliable (as it used to be not so long ago) even further trying to play it...

Different promo items for different stores just seems cruel though.

I can't help but think these pre-order packs will be useless once you get to the mid-levels of the games and start finding some more powerful weapons.

The Caravan and Tribal packs look pretty cool. The vault one looks kind of lame though. Vault armor and a 10mm pistol? Doesn't seem as good as a shotgun or even the machete.

I wonder if the supposed appeal in the armoured vault suit is that it was an item you could get from Moira in Craterside Supply pretty early in Fallout 3.
