Familiars: Does EVERYONE take the toad?

It really depends on the caster.

I have three PC's with caster levels.

The 11th level Wizard with a 10 Con held out for a Pseudodragon familiar. (He stays the hell away from melee.)

The 2nd level sorcerer hasn't bothered to get a familiar yet, but he will probably go for a Psuedodragon when he does.

The 11th level Ftr8/Wiz1/Def1/Dev1 went for a toad.

I bloody-well hope that list included a squirrel, otherwise I'm simply not buying it.

Unfortunately (and surprisingly) the squirrel did not make the Top Ten list, but strangely enough kiwis and penguins did... don't ask me how... that's just what most people here voted for ;-)

Take Care,
Joseph

PS: Perhaps I'll do a Follow-up article on this book in the new Signs and Portents magizine that Mongoose is putting out... if I do I'll see if I can slip in the squirrel ;-)

1 had an octopus

Wait.. octopus? You mean one of your characters took the principle predator of all halflings as a -familiar-?!

Were you able to keep it from pouncing on and devouring any PC halflings because it was a familiar, or did you just chalk up the little guys as colateral damage?

I've played 2 different arcane casters. 1 had a dog familiar (+2 wilderness lore (was a ranger as well)) and the other has a raven (he's my mystic theurge with lots of knowledge ranks).

You know, that would explain the disappearances.... :)

Actually the girl who had it, kept him in a bag of holding filled with water, and uh...may have thrown him to discharge touch spells...I REALLY don't think he liked that.

At least she didn't wear him as a hat.
:D

Hmmm, hold the octopus up to your mouth and have a high Bluff score and you just might convince that dumb hill giant you are a mind flayer. :D

Hey, that wouldn't be a "pigeon toad," would it? :)

Actually, AD&D stats for the pigeon toad were printed in an early edition of Dragon, in one of those "Dragon's Worstiary" articles (an April issue, naturally).
