Familiars should be people too

...but they're not. In my experience, familiars become just a bunch of stats with no personality. Does anyone else have this problem? If you do, then how do you handle it?

I like the familiars. They are nice sidekicks and are lot of fun.

Perhaps give them to another player as secondary character if he wants to. It gets a little bit difficult foir the DM if there are several familiars to play.

Best familars:

Flux: an air creature (like mephit) who was the accidental familiar of one of our players. He was thrown out of the plane of air and introduced himself to one of our wizards. We found out later that they've thrown him out because they could not stand him longer . As member of a race full of pranks and mischievousness this was pretty horrifying.

Irusil: An imp. This familar was full of dark thoughts and evil schemes (ok they were pretty easy to see).

Examples:
(His master was behaving strangely and was possessed)

Irusil to another partymember: Dear wizard my master is possessed by a creature with great power, I fear you have to slay him if you wish to overcome the posessor.

Or: It wasn't me, it was Flux
Or: If you want I can help you get rid of your sorry excuse of a familiar (Flux)
Or: Master you suffered the intolerance of others long enough, it is time for killing a few of your fellow partymembers. Start with the white mage.
Later, his master taught him a lesson and pinned him on a wall with daggers.:D

The Smiths familiar: There is a storm giant called the smith, because he is so forgetful that he has forgotten his own name. But he is a great smith. So his familiar is serving as his memory, reminding him of everything.

Mizzelfitz: Another air familiar. This one has calmed down a little bit, saved his mstress a few times and likes it if he can get under her robes. Only for the warmth of course.

Moguan: Not a real familiar but some kind of panther spirit that can bond with a person, giving enhanced abilities. Besides being a calm and wise advisor, he is also fond of eating...a lot. I think the group never explained the vanishing goat. :D
the unsolved mystery is, why does a spirit panther eat normal solid food ;)
