Familiars!

I'm looking for any and every method of improving one's familiar. I know of Improved Familiar, obviously, the dragon familiar feat from the Draconimacon, and of the planar familiar feat in the Planar handbook. But what else is there? Just need a name and a book, unless you want to give me a short description. Trying to get the most tripped out familiar possible

Celestial Familiar in BoED allows you to slap on the celestial template.
Complete Arcane has several spells, which make familiars stronger.
Complete Warrior has a list of more combat-oriented Improved Familiars.

There were a couple of spells on the WotC website Spellbook feature that transform a familiar into an elemental creature, celestial creature, undead, etc.

These were pretty powerful for their level. Having an air elemental familiar is a big step up, saftey wise, from a toad.

You can always gain a level in something that gives you more HP, or get a Con bonus increase. Your Fam gets 1/2 of your HP, so anything there helps.

Cast Polymorph Any Object on it. Works great if it's an Outsider (like imp) to start with.

Use the share spell ability. Any casted buff spell on the wizard also affects the familiar if it is within 5 foot range.

Or, for the enterprising necromancer, I present my dastardly familiar idea:

Stitched flesh familiar from Libris mortis - makes familiar Undead and gives you +4hd of undead you can control with animate dead.

Craft wonderous item - used to make your familiar "Spellstitched"... see complete arcane spellstitched template, which can only be applied to corporeal undead

Viola! Your familiar gets DR that improves with your level, spell-like abilities that you can program into it, a boost on all saves, some SR what more do you want?

Hehe. Seriously. You should look for my old thread regarding this beast. I used it on my players. A raven stitched flesh spellstitched familiar (12 hd lich master).. as a raven, it could even talk common, and thus it made a nice sorceror all its own.

Can someone else with craft wonderous item make your familiar spellstitched, or must you do the operation yourself?

As for Polymorph Any Object That's awesome! Except we're not talking that level range

The Elemental Familiar spell, I assume, completely erases any other goodness one may have had with the familiar? It doesn't matter if you have a cat or a mephit to start out with, the familiar will turn into the same tiny elemental, statwise.

Since it's permanent, you can always pay someone to cast it for you, for 1200 gold. But it might get dispelled. Hmmm...

Imps have an at-will polymorph, too, but they can only learn one or two forms, and the maximum HD is 12. I suppose you can try to convince your DM that your imp has learnt how to polymorph into an Erinyes.
