Fast Healing at 1st level?

Show him the drow thread and ask him about that LA...

Fast Healing +5 at low levels... that char is nearly unkillable (ok, a orc barbarian in rage with twohanded PA will kill him).

He wants to play a fightertype, with LA he lacks HP, that does not work. Wolverine himself is a huge bundle of hitpoints, in addition to his regeneration ability.

I'd go the bbn/dragon (perhaps 3.0 apprentice levels for level 1) shaman route with Rapid Metabolism as prerequ and Niffts Imp Uncanny Healing. That way, the char has Fast Healing 2 at level 1 if he's badly hurt (I don't think that's too broken). Allow him another Feat at level 3 that increases the Fast healing (4 below half hitpoints, 2 above).

That way he has a char that is hard to kill but cannot do anything but rage once per day and heal (himself fully and his buddies a little bit). You still need a way to get his claws... and he doesn't have many skillpoints for the whole jumping/climbing stuff Wolverine likes to do.
With a little bit of work, you should be able to have claws at 7th level (Dragon Disciple gets them at 2nd level).

How about a half-troll or troll-blood template?

I worked up a racial class for half-trolls here. That'll give you a lot of the other Wolverine-ish abilities as well: Scent and claws, for example.

That being said, the two Psionic feats that Nifft linked are probably sufficient if all your player wants is to heal faster than normal.

Oh come on, let him be Wolverine!

He can go NPC at level five and TPKs the regular party. Let everyone else know he wanted to be Wolverine.

I see your point, but you are giving the Fast Healing ability far too much credit. A 5HD barbarian with fast healing 2 wouldn't last three rounds against a well-balanced PC party. Healing 2 points of damage per round isn't going to help you very much when the wizard is tossing magic missiles at you, the fighter is using total defensive to keep you busy in melee, and the rogue is moving to flank...

The real power of this ability is that it eliminates the characters' dependence on healing spells. He rests up for a couple of minutes, and he is as good as new. That's like, an infinate number of cure critical wounds spells, for free, without a cleric.

And that's why I put the kabosh on it. He wants to heal for free? He can roll up a troll.

To make fast healing less broken for PCs, consider capping the amount of HP in a day, like maybe 5 or 10 hp per level. Its still useful in a fight, but it doesn't make the cleric obsolete. (Idea from Sean K. Reynold's book Curse of the Moon).

The regeneration while raging feat also sounds like a snazzy way to handle it.

Too bad, I would have loved to see how he realises the rest of the char.

I agree with your analysis. Yet, given the possibility to buy wands of cure light wounds, I don't think Fast Healing would have been too broken. If not: No way he gets it :)
