Fast help for sonic damage!

Simple question. If you are inside a silenced area per spell.... are you immune against sonic damage?

It seems sooo logical, but are there rules?

Since there are sooo many wizards out there who use sonical substituted fireballs or similar stuff...

I would house rule it that you would be to keep everyone from using sonic-based substitutions, but I don't think there are any rules on this.

Thanks, Rub, that thread was a reason why I started this one.

My reasoning gameswise would be: Sonic energy is the best since nearly noone is resistant against it. To balance this, I understood it is vulnerable to that simple silence spell we all like.

Otherwise everyone would use sonic attacks. As most mages do.

I would note that the same clerics who can cast Silence can cast Endure Elements (Sonic), Resist Elements (Sonic), Prot. from Elements (Sonic) and Energy Immunity (Sonic).

I don't see how it's unbalancing. Yes, there are creatures that have few immunities/resistances, but Silence isn't helping them at all. The same cleric who can Cast that spell also can cast Protection spells on the recipient.

Even more so, Silence offers an Area effect. Thus, basicly it's like giving Everyone in the area Sonic Immunity, a 7th level spell (6th for clerics).
 


I personally see the Sage as ruling that the Silence spell doesn't prevent it as I don't think it ever says this in black and white, and the Sage likes finding a rule to hang his hat on - usually.

Hmm, I would personally rule that silence stops all sonic attacks. Only because the bards ablility to Countersong protects by the same means.


Countersong: A bard with 3 or more ranks in Perform can counter magical effects that depend on sound (but not spells that simply have verbal components). As with inspire courage, a bard may sing, play, or recite a countersong while taking other mundane actions, but not magical actions. Each round of the countersong, the bard makes a Perform check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard) who is affected by a sonic or language-dependent magical attack may use the bard's Perform check result in place of his saving throw if, after rolling the saving throw, the Perform check result proves to be better. The bard may keep up the countersong for 10 rounds. Countersong is a supernatural ability.


This would bring me to the belief that sound (sonic) attacks must travel through air in between their target and the subject. And silence or a countersong counts as a minor anti-sound field.
 

The wording of the spell seems to imply it as it specifies that it protects against "sonic" damage and uses a horn of blasting as one of its examples.

As for how it works (discussed on the other thread as well), I just want to point out that it's an illusion, not an abjuration.
