I love to do up homebrew settings. Two of my favourites:
1) Blue Crossing - A small town at the fork in the river. The town itself is home to a lord, a small contingent of nobles, as well as a thriving merchant trade. Most notably, however; Blue Crossing offers a bounty on goblins, paying double if they are brought in alive. The goblins are then enslaved, and they work in a pit at the south end of town, laying the foundations for the Lord's new keep.
The goblin slavery problem wound up being a nice 'shades of gray' issue for my players. They debated freeing the slaves on a few occasions, though they never wound up doing it.
2) Oakwood - The village of Oakwood is a small, quaint place in the middle of a large forest. Once a year, the village hosts the 'Wild Goose Chase', an event where hunters gather to catch the wild geese who live in the woods. The hunter (or hunting party) who collects the most geese wins a sizeable purse.
This was a fun, light-hearted one shot I ran. Works nicely for a change of pace. The party survived the fight with Old Gander, a dire goose who lives near the lake.
