Favored Enemy Question

I think it's a stupid rule that you have to be evil to have your own race as favored enemy. If we look at the world today, you could say that many special forces have Favored enemy: human; they are trained to use human psychology and physiology to defeat their enemies, but that doesnt mean that they hate humankind.

Another real world example is the animal hunter. People who lives on killing animals often feel a profound respect for the animals they are hunting (look at the numbers of cultures who thanks the animals for letting them be hunted). Those people probably have Favored enemy: animals and dont have a problem with it.

The elf in your party is trained to hunt and kill humans, but that doesnt mean he have to kill every human he sees.

I agree completely with med stud and the others who have expressed the same opinion. My elf rgr/rog (we're using an alternate ranger) just reached a level where he has to choose a favoured enemy, and I'm going back and forth between choosing elves and humans. He used to be a bounty hunter before he became an adventurer, and has a lot of experience tracking both humans and other elves. And there's absolutely no hatred in there. He gets along fine with the other humans and elf in the party. It just happens that he has a lot of experience in fighting member of both races.

Shouldn't there maybe be a better name than "Enemy"? I mean, the bounty hunter angle, or such. What if you are a policeman (constable, what have you) and you are tracking a missing child. Examples like that. You could easily have your favored "enemy". The bouncer is a great example.
