Steeliest of the dragons
I'm pretty sure I've done a thread like this before...but don't feel like looking for it and...what the hey...it's fun stuff.

I have an opening in the "Wondrous Items" list for the starting set of my World of Orea RPG.

I have most of the ole "B/X/1e/oldschool" standbys (elven cloak & boots, ogre gauntlets, helm of underwater action, etc...). In an effort to keep things contained (simple for beginners), the list is only 30 items long. Not to worry, weapons, armors, wands, rings, etc... are all separated out. I'm just looking for wondrous/miscellaneous items.

Actually, I guess I should just lay out what I have to spare us all a bunch of repeats...

Wondrous Figurine

Edition isn't important, but if it's something from 3e or later, please give me a sentence or two for what it does.

So, what are some of your favorite wondrous/miscellaneous magic items?

My thanks. Happy Friday all.

I always liked immovable rods. A 3' long iron bar, rather thick and flat, similar to a ladder rung, with a button on one end. Push it and the rod locks in place. Even if it is hanging in mid-air, it will not move.

And there were a set of paints that would allow you to paint an object on a wall and then it existed for a short time. You could paint a torch, and have one. Or a doorway. Or a feast. Limited only by artistic skill. No living objects allowed, as I recall.

I also really like the figurines of wondrous power; something about being able to have an animal companion, but not ALWAYS have them there, is very interesting and useful. And seems very magical.

Handy but maybe a bit too useful are all the magic camping gear type items; one of my parties had a scroll they could stick on any handy flat surface that turned into a door - inside the door was a small room with bunk beds, camp stoves, trunks for gear, etc... They could wizard-lock the door, camp for several days at a time, etc... AND they could use it like a portable hole to store things. It was TOO useful. I think it was in the 2nd ed item compendium, but I have no idea what it was called. Heward's Handy Haversack was also very nice; even better than a bag of holding, since it organized your stuff.

I have the "Wondrous Figurine" [nee "Figurines of Wondrous Power"]. Figure I'll start with a lion (or maybe a wolf) for your standard fight for/with ya animal, an owl -that turns into a giant owl that can/will fly you around, can fight too, I guess, and a horse -for extra speedy travel over all terrains, not so great at fighting but can.

The camping stuff, I agree, can be too useful. I think things like the Endless Decanter and Everburning Torch are very useful and help minimizing resource management/book keeping. I agree with Mad_Jack that the Instant Fortress is very cool...and that door/parchment place sounds great too. But you're right, "too useful." I'm all for a safe refuge from time to time...but something that they can blatantly avoid all possible encounters, weather, hardships...you're right, from a DM's perspective, not fun.

Maybe in magic item list in the World of Orea "Champions Set" or, as you mention, some magic item supplement. (I've really gotta stop giving myself more work and just finish the danged starter set! hahaha)
