Favorite "New" Monsters

I'm pretty fond of the Radiant Idol. Until an unruly player axed my last campaign idea, an Idol with the oracle domain was going to be a major player in my game, stripped of his wings and place in Syrania for his unprincipled lust for knowledge and designs to supplant Aureon as the font of wisdom.

Choosing just new monsters from the Monster Manual, I'm particularly fond of the chuul, darkmantle, destrachan, gray render, and grick. In fact, I wrote up "Ecology" articles on each of those (only one of which was published, alas).

Hmmm....All the Grymkin fey from MN1, naturally. Shaft wights, pistol wraiths, and eldritch from the same book; especially pistol wraiths. Half-farspawn, blood demons from Beyond Countless Doorways, and tsochari. Red caps fall under my abiding love of wicked fey. Dregg from MN1 just plain rock. I had an awesome adventure where the PCs were escorting a caravan across a gnoll-infested plain; turned out that the caravan leader had a dregg in a cage on one of the wagons. Needless to say, it got out. :] Heh heh heh...

Lots - redcap, all the half-(whatever) templates, zakya and other non-standard rakshasa, cerebrilith, dolgaunt, dolgrim, entropic reaper, entomber, slaughterwight, changeling, shifter, kalashtar, warforged,....

Sounds like a pretty cool monster, but I absolutley hate the name - I wish people would try to be a bit more creative than just spelling a name or word backwards.

Still, I suppose "euqsam" ("masque") is better than "ecaf regguh" ("face hugger"), so maybe I should just count my blessings. :)

Actually, I think Ecafregguh (or Fregguh for short) would be better than Euqsam. Fregguh looks like typical fantasy name, aka "slamming a hamster on the keyboard." Euqsam doesn't look like anything.

The Famine Spirit is the coolest new monster in my opinion. Who's responsible for the recent draught?

Tsochar are quickly becoming a new favorite.

The use of templates is my favorite. You can modify creatures to be something known but scary or outright alien to the PCs and their players.

Before the use of templates, players always knew what you had and what the critter did. Templates have made the known unknown and I love it.
